The Bolgers of Wexford Co. Ireland and Ionia Co. Michigan

John Bolger was born abt. June 06, 1784 in the parish of Bree, Wexford Co. He married Catherine Codd, daughter of Max Codd and Mary? She was born abot. 1789 in Wexford. John died July 10, 1874 and Catherine died Oct. 02, 1882. Both are buried at St. John the Baptist in Hubbardston, MI. They had five children: James b. June 1817, Mary b.1821/22, Anna b. June 1823, Thomas b. 1827 & Catherine b. Mar. 19, 1830 (my great grandmother). They were all born in Ireland.

24th of June, 1852, District of New York-Port of New York, manifest of all passengers taken on board the British Ship Defence lists John Bolger, 54, Tho. 24, James 28, Anney 26, Cathn. 20 & Cathrine 45. This ship came from Dublin. The 1900 census for James Bolger states he came over in 1852. I have copies of Intention to become Citizen of the United States (Ionia Co. MI.) for James Bolger, Thomas Bolger & Michael Sinnott Nov. 8,1854 and for Edward Handlon Feb. 6, 1855 and Thomas Fahey 06-14-1856.

The 1870 census for North Plains Twp. Ionia Co. shows John & Catherine living with James Bolger and his wife, Ann and daughter, Catherine age 13. On the same page it lists Michael Sinnott and his wife, Mary Bolger Sinnott. Thomas Bolger and Mary Ann are listed in another household with a son, Wm. J. Thomas Fahey and wife Catherine (Bolger) and 6 children are also listed in 1870 census for North Plains Twp.

James Bolger married Ann Welsh. She was born bet. 1813/1816 in Glynn (just south of Bree). James died Oct. 18, 1912 and she died Dec. 11, 1885, both in Hubbardston, MI.

Mary Bolger married Michael Sinnott. She was born in 1821/22 and he was born 1820/21, both in Ireland. The 1910 census shows immmigration in 1849. Mary was born in New York Dec. 07, 1850. Margaret b. 07-19-1857 and James b. 10-07-1861, both in Michigan.

Anna Bolger married Edward Handlon. She was b. 06,1823 and he was b. abt. 1821, both in Ireland. He is also from the town of Glynn. They show up in the 1860 census in Otisco twp. Ionia Co. and in the 1870 and 1880 census in North Plains twp. The 1860 census has their oldest daughter as Jane. Children of Edward and Anna Handlon are: Ann b. 09-01-1853, James b. 01-18-1855, Andrew b. 09-06-1856, Catherine b.04-11-1859, Margaret b. 11-30-1861, John b. 07-03-1865. Andrew is the first one listed as born in Ionia Co.

Thomas Bolger married Mary Ann McBride. He was born in Ireland 1827/28 and she was born in West Troy, N.Y. 1842/43. The 1860 census has Thomas living with his brother and Mary Ann living with John Cowman. Thomas, Mary Ann & William show up in the 1870 census. Children of Thomas and Mary Ann are: William b. 07-16-1867, Ellen b. 12-29-1872, Catherine b. 11-29-1874, Catherine b. 12-25-1875 and John Thomas b. 07-04-1878. John married Sarah Jane O'Connell from Carson City, MI. 02-13-1900.

Catherine Bolger married Thomas Fahey. She was born in Wexford Co. 03-18-1830. He was born in Gort, Galway Co., Ireland 12-18-1835. Children of Thomas and Catherine Fahey are: Mary b. 09-1859, John b. 06-29-1860, James b. 09-02-1862, Dennis b. 04-17-1864, Margaret b. 11-18-1866, Catherine b. 06-24-1868, Patrick b. 08-21-1870, Julia b. 06-10-1873. Mary married Richard Joseph Kane. John married Ellen Donavan. James married Ellen Madigan. Dennis married Mary Ellen McCabe (my grandparents). Margaret married Patrick Rogers. Catherine married John Dolan. Patrick married Elizabeth Jane Dolan. Julia died of consumption 09-19-1900. The 1900 census taken the 25th of June shows Julia living with her father & mother and brother Dennis.

The 1875 plat map of North Plains, Ionia Co. MI. shows where all the Bolgers lived in that time in history. I would like thank my son, John for most of this information.
