Here is an updated genealogy report on Alfred BOLEN and his family.It reflects much more new information, thanks to others on GenForum.com!
Descendants of Alfred Bolen
Generation No. 1
1.ALFRED BOLEN was born 11 March 1815 in ,, Tennessee, and died 03 November 1894 in , Hancock County, Indiana.He married KEZIAH JANE JOHNSTON 28 June 1849 in , Hawkins County, Tennessee.She was born 09 January 1820 in ,, Tennessee, and died 25 October 1886 in , Hancock County, Indiana.
Notes for ALFRED BOLEN:
Alfred's birthdate is calculated for data on tombstone which is not the same as taken from a family bible which states it as May 1, 1815.Alfred is buried in Burris/Hendricks/Hendrickson Cemetery.
Alfred was a farmer.Nancy, his daughter, used to tell jokingly that she'd drop a grain of corn and listen to it tinkle down the rocks, and when it came to rest, she'd go get a handful of dirt and cover it.Actually, it is thought that Alfred may have been fairly well fixed prior to the Civil War, during which he lost everything he had.
Being Union sympathizers in Rebel territory during the Civil War, the family suffered much.The Rebels stole everything they had to eat. They had one old cow left which they butchered and then hid in a hollow tree.At night they took it out and canned it in big cans, then dug holes in the ground to hid them.At the end of the war, in March 1866, the entire family left Tennessee in a covered wagon, bound for Indiana.With some of them walking alongside part of the time, it took about three weeks. It was recounted, by Nancy, that people along the way gave them food, etc., knowing they were refugees from a Southern battleground. We have found since receiving this story, that about the only way they could have come was by the Cumberland Gap. We were informed by a park ranger at the Gap, that once they got to the Gap they would have to disassemble their wagon carry everything across then reassemble it.
End of info from William Reason.
We believe that the Bolens may have stayed in Fayette Co Indiana for year or two before going on to Hancock County. In comparing marriage dates and the birth of some children, we believe that the family must have left Hawkins County prior to 1866. In searching for more information on the Bolen family, in particular looking for possible parents for Alfred, we have found in the 1830 census of Hawkins County TN most all Bolens were listed as FREE PEOPLE OF COLOR. Being listed this way there is no info, only head of household. We did find a Mitchell Bolen that had a son who would have been the right age for Alfred.

Notes for MARGARET BOLEN:
Margaret's birth date came from a bible given to William Tishner, son of Charles, by Nancy Jane.Margaret is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN.In the 1880 Marion County, Indiana census, MargaretBolen was listed as Maggie age 27, Nancy Jane age 14, Charles Grant age 11, and Maggie (which we assume was Mary) age 6.No Rudolph Tishner listed. We have found Margaret living in Hancock Co. IN with her parents in the 1870 census, her Nancy and Charles were listed as Bolens. We can find no Rudolph Tishner in either Hancock County or Marion County between 1860-1880.We cannot find a record of Margaret's marriage to Rudolph Tishner but have found marriage to Rudolph Lister (Lester) in Connersville, Fayette Co, IN in 1872. Have not been able to find out what happened to Rudolph. We believe that Nancy Jane and Charles were probably born out of wedlock. We cannot figure out where the name Tishner came from unless due to accent Lester was confused as Tishner. There was a story within the early family that Rudolph went to PA and never came back.

Mamie died of Hypostatic Pneumonia at a nursing home located at 7505 E. 87th Terrace, Kansas City, Missouri.She is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Lot #33, Block #41, Grave #5, Kansas City, Kansas.
Mamie's adult life was filled with many sorrows.First she had to marry because of pregnancy.The man she married was not stable and had trouble staying employed because of his continued alcoholism.The
juvenile courts placed Mamie's children in foster care in 1908, which caused Mamie to finally file for divorce (granted in 1909).Mamie remarried, but again to a man who we believe was unstable.Mamie's
oldest son, Claude, did not like Mamie's new husband and was not afraid to say so.Mamie worked for many years as an aid at General Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, retiring in 1947.She resided in a
poor part of town in what was known as railroad shacks.
Recently, we found that Mamie knew what happened to her children, and what families had taken them in.Initially, Claude was sent to McCune Farm, Bennie was taken in by a family who wanted no contact with Mamie, Roy and Ray were taken in by a family named Hilts, Fred was taken in by a family named Kurtz, and it is believed that the youngest, Mamie, was adopted by a family named Rice in Lawrence, Kansas.For whatever reasons, Mamie did not share any of this information with her oldest child, and she went to her grave with knowledge that could have allowed the brothers to reunite as adults. Claude tried many times to locate his lost siblings, but with no clues, his searches were unsuccessful.Through the information available in this "computer age", we have been able to locate the
whereabouts of all of Ben's and Mamie's children except for Bennie and Mamie.
Mamie moved quite often around the Kansas City area, crossing the Kansas and Missouri state lines.At the time of Mamie's father's death in 1919, Mamie was living at 702 W. 13th Street, Kansas City,
Missouri as a BROPHY. When her mother died in 1937, Mamie was living at 515 E. 16th Street, Kansas City, Missouri. A search of the Kansas City, Missouri city directories gave us the following:
1931-Mrs. Mamie Brophy resided at 1516 Holmes;
1932-Mamie Brophy resided at 710B E. 8th (note:an Edward Brophy as well as a Joseph E. Brophy resided at the same address);
1933-Edward and Mamie Brophy resided at 1423 Belleview Avenue;
1934-Edward J. and Mamie Brophy resided at 918 E. 13th;
1935-Edward J. and Mamie Brophy resided at 918 E. 13th;
1936-Joseph E. and Mamie Brophy resided at 717 Tracy Avenue;
1937-Mrs. Mamie Brophy resided at 1514 Holmes;
1938-Mrs. Mamie Brophy resided at 913 E. 14th;
1939-Joseph E. and Mamie Brophy resided at 911 E. 14th;
1940-no listing was found;
1945-Mamie Brophy, hospital assistant, General Hospital, no address mentioned (note: this could
mean that Mamie was living in Kansas City, Kansas again).
According to Mamie's social security application taken in January 1938, Mamie was living with her son and daughter-in-law (Claude and Patsy Scott) at 1408 Troost, Kansas City, Missouri.Mamie's address at the time of her death in 1959 was 615 E. 16th, Kansas City, Missouri.
Notes for BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SCOTT:
Ben died of Carcinoma of the larynx in General Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri.He is buried beside his second wife in Quindaro Cemetery, Lot 316, Section 4, Kansas City, Kansas.
Ben was a stone mason and taught his trade to his son, Claude.He was also an alcoholic, a disease which unfortunately ruins many a family. Ben was not well liked by family nor friends.Hisdaughter-in-law, Patsy, would not let Ben enter their home if he was under the influence.Many a time, Ben would come to the door with hat-in-hand and ask permission to enter from Patsy.Ben even had trouble relating to his grandchildren.
In 1895, Ben was living at 2111 E. 9th, Kansas City, Missouri; his occupation was a section hand for the railroad.The 1900 Kansas census states that Ben and Mamie were living in Quindaro Township, Wyandotte county, Kansas.We have been unable to locate Ben or Mamie in 1910 (the year following their divorce).The 1920 census has Ben living with his brothers, Linus and Notley, at 617 Cherry Street, Kansas City, Missouri.Ben surfaces again in a review of Kansas City, Missouri city directories as follows:
1922-resided at 1523 Oak, occupation stone mason contractor;
1923-resided at 1523 Oak, occupation as contractor;
1924-resided at 1523 Oak, occupation as contractor;
1925-resided at 814 E. 15th, occupation stone mason;
1926-resided at 907 E. 16th, occupation stone mason;
1927-1933 could find no listing;
1934-resided with Louise at 5819 Quincy, occupation laborer;
1935-resided with Louise at 5819 Quincy, occupation laborer;
1936-resided with Louis at 5828 Brighton, occupation stone mason;
1937-resided with Louise at 5828 Brighton, occupation stone mason;
1938-resided with Louise at 5828 Brighton, occupation laborer;
1940-resided with Louise at 1320 Harrison;
1941-resided with Louise at 1320 Harrison; and in 1942-resided with Louise at 1315 Charlotte, occupation stone mason.
On Ben's social security application taken in January 1938, Ben was unemployed and living at 5821 Brighton Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri.When Ben's brother (Linus) and sister (Alice) died in 1945, Ben was living at 626 Harrison Street, Kansas City, Missouri.At the time of his death in 1957, Ben was living at 1218 Harrison, Kansas City, Missouri.However, his wife, Louise Anna, was living at 811 E.
16th, Kansas City, Missouri.Why they were living apart is unknown.
Marriage Notes for MAMIE MCCLAIN and BENJAMIN SCOTT:
Mamie had moved back to Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas before filing for divorce from Ben.According to the divorce petition, it appears that Ben had abandoned her for at least 1 year prior to the court hearing. About that same time, Ben had abandoned Mamie and his children, and Mamie had given them up to foster care.The divorce petition further states that Ben had been guilty of extreme cruelty, gross neglect, and habitual drunkenness due to:1)Ben had repeatedly struck and beat Mamie, called her vile and abusive names, and beat and abused their children in her presence, 2) Ben was an able bodied man and had failed, neglected and refused to provide Mamie with the ordinary necessities of life for more than one year, and 3) Ben had been in the habit of drinking intoxicating liquor in excess and in the habit of becoming drunk on an average of once a week
for the past three years.
The 6 children are listed in the divorce decree with Mamie being given custody; however, their future lied in the hands of the Juvenile Courts of Jackson County, Missouri and Wyandotte County, Kansas.In the end, only Claude remained in contact with both of his parents.
Notes for JOSEPH BROVIAK BROPHY:
Joseph died of broncho pneumonia and carcinoma of bronchus at General Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.He is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas.
Joseph was a produce salesman.He had lived in the Kansas City area for 65 years.It is believed that he immigrated with his parents from Germany in 1881.

1919.We have been unable to locate a copy of the marriage license in
