I think you found my ggrandfather. 1880 Census, Maryville, Nodaway Co., MO. shows H.C. Bolen, wife Martha, children: Eva L., Emma E., Martha E., Anna R., and my grandfather John H. Notes for John (Sr)Gray states Rev. H.C. Bolen preached at John's funeral 12/31/1858(?). Notes state John Gray professed conversion in 1858 at a metting held at the Pleasant View school house and joined the M.E. church, south. Must be church H.C. Bolen was minister at. Not sure what M.E. stands for. I am so glad to have the information provided by your messages. Would appreciate any further information you may have. Anxious to hear from you!!
