Michel,
Your information on the "BOIE" name being
French is no doubt correct. When we first
looked into the surname "BOIE" we were told French.
However, it was known that my BOIE inlaws came over from Germany and spoke German.
I did not find out that the spelling of the name changed until I located actual records, this past year.
My husbands family name of "BOIE" was originally spelled "BOJE" in Germany but pronounced "boy".
When this German family arrived in America, they could not speak, read or write any English, so their name was mis-spelled as "BOIE" by American record keepers. Rather than change all the records later, we assume, it was easier to just accept the new spelling when the children learned English.
That is the only explanation I can give you.
I think this happened very often to many families and is the reason we have so many different spellings to the same names here in this country.
It also makes researching our genealogies
very hard and challenging.
I wish you good luck with your research.
Sincerely,
Judy Mills Boie
