Peter Bohrer, f. of John and Mary Ellen mid-1800s

I have hit a dead end on my Peter Bohrer. According to the 1900 Grayson Co, TX census, listing John (b. 1848 in IL) and Abigail (May) Bohrer, John's father was born in PA. I have Peter as his father but nothing else! Mary Ellen Bohrer (b. 1851 in IL) married William Ramsey Maeyers (b. 1845 in IL). They are my gg grandparents. Both the Bohrer and Maeyers lines are difficult to trace. I'm wondering whether the spellings were changed along the way?
Any info regarding either line would be much appreciated!!
