Susan, I have done further research on this family of Bogans (Boggans)and found that there is a possibility of a connection to my line.I looked up Stephen L. on census and found that he was the son of George H and Adline? H. Boggan. He was living in Dumas Shop, Anson, NC on 1850 census at age 16.It is his father, George that I am interested in as a possible brother to my John L. Bogan.
Stephen's son, James H. (born 1879 in Arkansas) lived for a time in Little River County, Arkansas around 1920.I learned from an elderly cousin that James often visited Nettie Bogan Bivins Cleghorn (my great great Aunt). Were they related? The cousin believes so and recalls his Granny Cleghorn and James H. Boggan visiting often.James H. owned a store in the community. It seems strange to me that he would have moved to that area which was a very small community, where my Bogans were living at the time unless he was related to them and the family had contact over the years.
Oddly enough, my John L. Bogan named his first son, George and his first daughter, Nancy A.I know that Stephen L. married Flora A. Bogan whose mother was Nancy A. Bogan(Stephen must have married a cousin).
George H., Stephen's father was born in NC in 1810.My John L. was born in SC 1824 but supposedly married in NC abt. 1846 or 47 before beginning his migration to Arkansas.
I found George and his family on 1850 census in Dumas Shop, Anson, NC where they could have been living when my John L. was married.
Who was George's father?NC Boggans or SC Bogans?
I also know that John L. was in Mississippi sometime between 1857 and 1858.I found George H. in Marshall, Mississippi in 1860 census where Stephen also lived in 1860.Do you know when George and his son, Stephen L. went to Mississippi? My John L. is not found on 1860 or 1870 census, but his son, William R. married a girl who was living in Mississippi between 1861 and 1870.Where in Mississippi, I don't know, but I know they were there because his wife's 3 younger siblings were born in Mississippi around that time.
Then, I do not find Stephen L. on 1870 census.Later in 1880, I find him in Arkansas, Pope County and my John L. Bogan in Little River County, AR where he remained until his death about 1898.I believe you said Stephen L. remained in Pope County, Arkansas on 1900 census.
It could be coincidence that I find these two Bogan families in the same areas at about the same time, but I don't believe so.There could well be a connection.Do you know anything about Nancy A. Bogan, Flora's mother?
Anything you have on George could also be helpful.I have been in contact with grandson of James H. (great grandson of Stephen L.) who said he would try to connect me with his sister who knows more about the family history, but after nearly 6 months, I've not heard from her.I'm hopeful to find a connection since now I know that James H. associated with Anganetta (Nettie) Bogan Bivins Cleghorn (daughter of John L. Bogan) and both lived in Little River County in 1920 and before.I am checking to see where James H. lived in 1910, but no results yet.I am hoping he moved there early and may have had contact with my Great Grandmother and her siblings as well as my great grandmother's aunt Nettie.
I was told my James H. Bogan's grandson that his aunt Lucille still lives in Little River County (born 1912) with two of her nieces.I plan to make every effort to contact her as soon as I can get her address or phone number.
You never know where this could lead, so I'm pursing it wholeheartedly.Carole
I hope you
