The following is posted for the benefit of those descended from James and Catherine (Butler) Bodine:
JAMES BODINE was born about 1793 in Loudoun County, Virginia, son of Francis Bodine and his 1st wife Winifred. He died 15 July 1836 in Marshall County, Alabama.
On 10 January 1814 James Bodine was drafted for a period of 3 months at the Fairfax County Courthouse into the company of Captain George W. Hunter, 4th Regiment of Virginia Militia under the command of Colonel Thomas Chellen. He was honorably discharged on 10 April 1814 at the same place. James Bodine appears on the 1815 personal property tax list for Fairfax County. Since he is not named again on the tax list for 1816, it seems likely it was at that time the family moved to Sevier County, Tennessee where they resided some 10 years. About 1827-1830 James Bodine then moved his family to Jackson County, Alabama, living in that portion of the county that was taken on 9 January 1836 to form a part of Marshall County.
In his father's will, Francis Bodine stated "I give and bequeath unto my beloved son James Bodine an Entry of fifty acres of land Joining the old original tract." James died shortly after his father, and Anna Bodine, Francis's widow and James' step-mother, came into possession of the land as attested to in the 1837 and 1838 Sevier County tax lists.
James Bodine was maried 27 January 1815 in Fairfax County, Virginia to Catherine Butler, daughter of Henry Butler. Catherine was born 1795-96 in Virginia and lived the rest of her life in Marshall County. In 1850, aged 58, she headed a household that included her children William and Sarah. In 1860, aged 65, she lived in the home of her son William. In 1870, aged 74, she lived with her daughter Sarah Collins and in 1880, aged 84, she was again living with her son William. She died 26 November 1880.
Issue of James and Catherine (Butler) Bodine:
1. Mary Ann Bodine, born c1816 in Fairfax County, Virginia; died c1898 in Blount County, Alabama. Married c1833 to William Thomas Moon (b. c1807 in Sevier Co., TN; d. 1868 in Blount Co., AL). The Moon family was living 1840 in Hamilton County, Tennessee; 1850 in Polk County, Tennessee; 1855-1856 in Georgia; 1860 in Marshall County, Alabama and 1870 in Blount County, Alabama. William and Mary Moon were buried in Salem Primitive Baptist Churchyard, Blount County. Issue: Jonas Posey (1835), James Harvey (1836), Catherine (1839), Lydia (1840), Gideon Francis (1841), Sarah Jane (1843), William Riley (1845), Mary J. (1849), Susan Ann (1852), John Baptist (1855), Isaac Kimbrough (1857).
2. Ann Bodine, born c1818 in Sevier County, Tennessee; died 1875-77 in Jackson County, Alabama. Married c1832 to Jobe N. Wells (b. 1813 in TN; d. 15 Feb 1884 in Jackson Co., AL). The Wells family was living 1840 in Jackson County, Alabama and 1850-1860 in Marshall County. Jobe Wells worked as a farmer. Issue: Mary (1833), Martha (1836), Elizabeth J. (1840), William (1842), Francis M. (1845), Susan (1846), Sarah (1849), Henry (1853), Amanda (1854), Simon (1857).
3. Susannah Bodine, born c1820 in Sevier County, Tennessee; died 1870-80. Married 8 June 1836 in Marshall County, Alabama to Joseph Whitworth (b. 25 Feb 1815 in TN; d. 15 Feb 1886). Joseph Whitworth was a farmer, according to the Marshall County censuses of 1860-1880. It is unclear if his wife in the 1880 census, Susanna, aged 38, is identical with Susannah Bodine. Their marriage record notes the couple as Joseph Whitter and Susan Bodine. James Bodine gave his consent for his daughter Susannah. Issue: Claiborne (1837), Catherine (1840), Martin P. (1842), Joseph (1843), Nancy Ann (1846), Mary (1849), Andrew (1851), James (1854), Margaret (1856), Martha (1858).
4. Hannah Bodine, born c1822 in Sevier County, Tennessee; died after 1870. Married 16 June 1840 in Marshall County, Alabama to Claiborne Whitworth (b. 1823 in TN; d. 1860-70). Claiborne Whitworth was a farmer according to the 1860 Marshall County census. In 1870, his wife, Hannah, was head of the household which included 3 of their children. Claiborne is believed to have left his family for South Carolina never to return. The marriage record of Claborn Whitworth and Hannah Bodine notes the couple received the consent of their parents Clabourn Whitworth and Catherine Bodine, widow, who stated that both the bride and groom were under age. Issue: Sarah C. (1843), Samuel H. (1847), Albert H. (1848), Joseph W. (1851), Alexander (1853), William H. (1855), Martha J. (1856), John M. (1860).
5. Henry Bodine, born c1825 in Sevier County, Tennessee; died 15 July 1862 in Tupelo, Lee County, Mississippi. Married 6 September 1842 in Marshall County, Alabama to Margaret Berdoth Patrick (b. March 1827 in AL; d. after 1900). Henry Bodine stated in 1860 that he worked as a blacksmith. He died intestate, leaving a estate administration that recorded the names of his 6 surviving children (Marshall County Final Record, 6: 246). Henry Bodine enlisted on 10 December 1861 in Company E, 49th Alabama Infantry and died during his military service of typhoid fever. In 1900, Margaret (Patrick) Bodine was living with her son Martin Bodine in Marshall County. issue: Mary Elizabeth (1844), Martin P. (1848), Thursa Ann (1853), Minerva Catherine (1855), Julia K. (1857), Solomon (1859), Lydia (1862).
6. Francis Bodine, born 12 May 1827 in Sevier County, Tennessee; died 1906-07. Married (1) 11 March 1848 in Marshall County, Alabama to Minerva Hester (b. c1827 in North Carolina; d. 1854-56 in Marshall County, Alabama.) Married (2) 4 December 1856 in Marshall County to Elizabeth Roper (b. 2 November 1832 in Tennessee; died 1880-91). Married (3) 18 October 1891 in Marshall County to Mary Merritt (b. 5 April 1849 in Alabama; d. 20 November 1923 in Marshall County). Francis and Mary Bodine were buried in Bodine Cemetery, Brown's Valley, Marshall County. In the Marshall County censuses of 1860-1900 Francis Bodine reported his occupation as farmer. Issue: Sarah E. (1850), Catherine Julia (1854), Mary J. (1859), William H. (1863), David (1865), Henry W. (1868), James W. (1872).
7. William E. Bodine, born 29 August 1833 in Marshall County, Alabama; died there 31 January 1887. Married 23 September 1853 in Marshall County to Mary Ann Dunn (b. 17 January 1832 in Alabama; d. 7 September 1886 in Marshall County.) William Bodine reported his occupation as farmer in the 1860-1880 censuses of Marshall County. William and Mary Bodine were buried in Bodine Cemetery, Brown's Valley, Marshall County. From his newspaper obituary in "The Guntersville Democrat" of 10 Feb 1887- "Died at his home in this county on Jan. 31st Mr. William Bodine. Mr. Bodine is a well known citizen of Marshall. He has been a resident of this section of the county a number of years and by his just dealing with his fellow men won a host of friends who mourn his death." William Bodine enlisted 15 Feb 1863 at Huntsville, Alabama. He was stationed in Macon, Georgia on 31 Oct 1864. Issue: Julia Ann (1857), Williamson Cobb (1858), Sarah (1862), Louisa (Elizabeth?)(1863), Henry B. (1865), Roxie A. (1868), John F. (1870).
8. Sarah Bodine, born c1836 in Marshall County, Alabama; died 1870-80. Married 24 September 1856 in Marshall County to Wiley S. Collins (b. c1834 in Alabama; died 1860-70). Wiley Collins was a farmer according to the 1860 Marshall County census. By 1870, Sarah Collins was head of the household which included children Mary, 12, and John, 10, and her mother, Catharine Bodine. Wiley Collins is thought to have died between the two censuses. Sarah (Bodine) Collins may have died by 1880, when her mother was living with Sarah's brother William Bodine. There is no record of a remarriage for Sarah Collins in Marshall County. The marriage record of Wiley S. Collins and Sarah Bodine notes their marriage took place at the house of Frank Bodine, presumably referring to Sarah's brother Francis. Issue: Mary Ann (1858), John S. (1859).
