Boag/Boags/Bogue/Bogues/Boggs and Y-DNA

Recently there have been some interesting development in Y-DNA, which is the DNA passed strictly along the male line. The Boag and Bogue surname appear to be phonetically the same (long O), which might suggest the same lineage but alternate spellings. Boggs is generally pronounced with a short O, but occasionally I have heard others use a short O. In the 1841 census of Scotland, Boag is by far the more frequently found spelling with 536 occurrences.

Boag 536
Boags 2
Bog 10
Bogue 38
Bogues 1
Boggs 46
Bogs 6

The answer to the question "Are all of these surnames related?" might help us solve some genealogy mysteries.

There is a Y-DNA project for variations of the Boag/Boags/Bogue/Bogues/Boggs surnames. A website with some early results is found at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/b/boggs/results.html

Early results suggest a common signature for most Boggs's; Some Boggs's and Bogue's may related. There are two different signature for Bogue.

No Boag or Boags have been tested yet - only Boggs and Bogue. It would be helpful to determine the Boag Y-DNA signature.

Below is the website if you would like to join the Surname project. The group rate for 12 markers is $99, $148, for 25, and $189 for 37.

There are other testing options. The Sorenson project ( http://smgf.org/ ) will test for free, but there can be long delays in getting results.

If I can address any questions or concerns, I would be glad to try.
