Hello Sam
I don't know if you will get this e-mail but I try anyway.
My family also came from Latvia . My greatgrandmother was named Sarah or Soreh. She could be the Zara you mension. I have been collecting material about all the Blumbergs I can find ,hoping to be able to Sort them all out. I asked everyone to send pictures and hope this way to be able to sort the people out. Alreaddy I have found that several people were know under different names acording to which language their descendents speak. If you have pictures I would love to see them. I know my grandparents Channe and Selig Blomberg had family in Koenigsberg and Memel that they used to visit when they were very young. But I have not managed to find out who. My greatgrandparents Sarah and Joseph were cousins and both born Blumberg.I have pictures of both and of their children. The names of their children were Abraham M. (Marcus?), Selig J. (Jacob?), Israel, Jette(Chaie) Ida or Ite and Benno Michel(Could be Ben Zion?).Abraham named his daughters Selma or Selde and Njuma Rose, Selig named his 3 daughters : Sarah, Sheine Mere and Rachel Bella. Israel named his Sarah Ester and Jette named one Juda Hirsh and the other son?, Ida named hers Sore and Isi,and Benno named his Liv (Proberbly Lea). The oldest sarah died in 1912? Her father was named Sloime. In the Lituanian files there was a Sloime married to Mereiam with 3 daughters Sarah, Sheine and Taube. In 1858 they move from their home the file says. Sarah and Joseph had a cousin named Sloime Gershon Lewin. He had perhaps a sister named Ida Lewin Blumberg.
My grandmother said on an interview 1980 when she was 90 years old, that there was a very specific naming rule in the families in Latvia." You should name your child after your grandparents. But if they were still living, then you should name them after your siblings". I have seen that in my family and in many others this rule has been used all the time. I have this naming in each generation all the way back to the early 1750ties.
Please write me to my e-mail
All the best from Pheya Yair
