Is your mother still alive?

Because 1. it is easier to get military records because she is the spouse. 2. Did your dad/mom ever receive military pension? Before the military gives out a pension they must know all sorts of interesting tidbits. I found two additional wives for a relative that was in the Civil War when I requested a full pension file.

Your best bet would be requesting a full pension file for him and you may want his full military file. Because that will have promotions and possibly awards received, etc. If he did receive awards but you do not have any medals you can request replacement medals.
