In reference: Needham Coward and wife Ester Phoebe Blount: BLOUNT There were two Blount lines found in the Bertie Co.,NC area, early 1700's. One a line of European origin. The other a Native Tuscarora line. Chief Tom Blunt/Blount adopted the Anglocized surname of Blount from a member of the Colonial Blount family greatly admired by him. I can not say for sure which line Ester Phoebe comes out of. COWARD/COWART There is a Coward line considered to be of European origin. Also a Native Tuscarora Coward/Cowart family line. This, my family tradition tells me, is the line Needham orignates from.... as did my GR-GR-GRmother Cecilia. Making them cousins of some degree and sorts in a maze of cousins not always easy to untangle and document. Part of the unwritten heritage of remembered Native kinship. As has been said, many Tuscarora fled North toward New York to save as many of their people as they could in the wake of the Tuscarora War of 1711-1713. A part of that history which is lesser known is that a sizable number sought refuge in the swamps, staying behind and protecting the Old Ones and Little ones that could not travel. They eventually migrated down the rivers into the Pee Dee and Lumber River basins of the Eastern Carolina borderlands. Many of their descendants still reside there today. Children and grandchildren of the original Tuscarora refugees, in turn, migrated further South and West like the Coward and Blount families More information on Carolina families of Tuscarora heritage can be found on these sites: Native American History and Research Bertie County, North Carolina http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncbertie/tuscarra.htm American Indian Records By Steven Pony Hill http://sciway3.net/clark/freemoors/Indian.htm Notify Administrator about this message?
