Francis served in William A Redding's mounted Company 1st Regiment, during the Seminole Indian Wars about 1841. This was a sad story of America which entailed the forced removal of Cherokee, Chotaw and Seminole indians from their lands in the east to lands in Oklahoma. The land was then taken for land developers and sold to white settlers. It is now a National Historic Trail called the "Trail of Tears". Winniford may have been a Cherokee. People at the Trail of Tears Association (TOTA) may be able to help. Their web site is: www.nationaltota.org

They may be able to tell you how to contact the Genealogy Research Center for the Trail of Tears.
