Blount is often pronounced Blunt and often spelled that way. There is also a story going around (so far unsubstantiated) that during the time of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, when Catholics were persecuted, some Blounts dropped the "o" and became Anglicans. Most often it was because of general illiteracy the name was often misspelled. I have seen all of the following: Blount, Blunt, Blounte, Blunte, Blund, Bluntus and Blont. There is also a branch of the Blount family that uses the surname of Croke. If interested about this lokk up Nicholas Blount who changed his name to Croke and fled England.
