Capt. James Blount, the progenitor of the Blounts of North Carolina, was of the Astley Blounts of Worcestershire, England. He was in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, in 1655, and had moved to North Carolina by 1669. His name was spelled Blount but was pronounced "blunt." In some of the records of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries this Blount family is spelled as Blunt because of the pronunciation as "blunt."
In the American South today, the name Blount is generally pronounced "blunt."
