Actually, the title of Mountjoy did not die out with Charles Blount, as he had other legitimate heirs. It was simply that his children by Penelope Devereux, Lady Rich, were all illegitimate and couldn't inherit. Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy did not marry Penelope until 1605, while his brother Christopher had married Penelope's mother Lettice Knollys much earlier. Since Christopher was executed in 1601 for involvement with the Essex conspiracy of his stepson, Penelope and Lettice were never sisters in law, although mother and daughter did marry brothers.
