Info Available about early Blounts in NC and TN

I have recently transcribed 20+ handwritten pages made by my grandmother, Effie Idora Estridge, about the Blounts in NC and TN. The information appears to have been extracted from a chapter about the Blounts in a book by Zella Armstrong titled "Notable Southern Families" and was probably written in the 1950's. Effie was very active in the DAR in Rowan County, N.C. and this may have been for a talk. I am including, below, the first few paragraphs. Please contact me directly if interested.

Effie Idora Estridge married 1912 Franklin Pierce Pratt (1885 - 1943) and was my paternal grandmother. She was the daughter of William Joseph Estridge (1869 - 1931) and Ida Tallulah Austin (1868 - 1899). Ida was the daughter of Hampton D. Austin (1845 - 1927) and Caroline McCorkle (1844 - 1928). Caroline was the daughter of Nelson McCorkle (1815 - 1850) and Matilda Blount (1817 - 1896). Matilda was the daughter of John Blount ( - ) and Hannah ? ( - ). Effie may have thought that Matilda d/o John Blount descended from the Blounts mentioned. However, any direct link to these Blounts is currently unknown and any information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.

This document is available in both Word 6.0 (.doc that can be opened with WordPad) and ASCII text (.txt) formats.

The Blout Family

The Blount family has been pronounced the oldest in North Carolina and this means, of course in Tennessee also.

No family, according to Governor Henry T. Clark, genealogist and historian, came to the province earlier than James Blount, who settled in Chowan, North Carolina in 1664. He was a younger son of Sir Walter Blount of Sodington, Worcestshire, England, and was a Captain in Life Guards of Charles II.

In England the family can be carried back for many generations to and through the conquest into Normandy, and then for many years. So the Blounts can truly boast of being an old family.

With William the Conqueror, three young Blounts, sons of Blound, the Lord of Guisnes, went to England. From two of them the English family sprang and in the succeeding years changed the family name less than most of the conquering Normans, for it appears today as it was written then.

James Blount the Emigrant

When James Blount, younger son of Sir Walter Blount of Sodington came to the province of North Carolina he is said to have been accompanied or followed by a brother who settled on the Taw or Pamlico RIver. Ther adherence to the Royal cause probably accounted for their emigration.

The first James Blount, the emigrant, son of Sir Walter Blount, is said to have migrated to America in 1664 through the settlement of Chowan is given as in 1669. He settled on a tract of land there which remained in the possession of his family until the death of his descendant, Clement Hall Blount in 1842. James Blount was a member of the Gouvenor's Council and was one of the Burgessses of Chowan. He married and left on son John Blount.
