In Reply to: Cpt. Blood, Pirate; Thomas Blood, thief by Peter Blood of 1886

According to the Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford University Press) Colonel Thomas Blood, who had served in the Parliamentary forces in the English Civil War, made his abortive attempt to steal the crown jewels on May 9, 1671.

Dressed as a parson, with three accomplices he tricked the keeper of the jewels at the Tower of London, Talbot Edwards, into letting Blood and his friends see the jewels. Once inside the jewel house Edwards was attacked and the orb, sceptre and crown were carried off. Blood was captured carrying the crown.

Audacious as always Blood refused to confess except to the king himself (Charles II). The king was impressed and Blood not only escaped punishment but had foreited estates in Ireland returned to him as well.

Contrary to all expectations Blood died a natural death on August 24 1680.
