Dear David: I'm glad to know of your interest in Mary (Blood) Bentley and the other children of Norman Alonzo and Emma (Bentley) Blood. I'll take your questions in order and share what data I've gathered. A great deal of the information comes from Sue Richardson, a great-granddaughter of Charles and Mary (Blood) Bentley. Sue's e-mail address is suerichardson2@cox.net.

Mary's second name is spelled Melinda on the 1880 Census and on the family tree Sue provided. Her birth is listed as Mary Malinda in the Jericho Vital Records. Her marriage record, 27 September 1882, Jericho, VT, calls her Mary M. Blood, age 12. According to Sue, they did not live as man and wife until she was 15. The couple had 8 children. They were divorced and she married (2) Walter Forbes. She died in 1967 at the age of 97 when Sue was 10. Sue remembers her!

I agree with you that Lottie was a nickname for Charlotte. Emma Bentley Blood had a sister Lottie (Charlotte) who died of heart problems 6 May 1868, just before her 12th birthday.

Melissa must have been born in 1873 if she was 7 on the 1880 Census, but I have no other dates for her. She was also known as Mary Melissa Blood. She married Edward McGee and had three or four children according to Addie Bentley Macomber, a daughter of Emma's brother Zalmon.

Laura Jane born 7 Mary 1876, Jericho. She is called Jennie L. Blood when she married (1) Lewis A. Sherman, 25 September 1897, Waterbury, VT. She is called Laura E. Blood when she married (2) Archie E. Holden, 29 June 1903, Burlington, VT. For both marriages, the parents are a correct listing.

Lottie was 5 months old at the time of the 1880 census. She was adopted by a Mrs. Macomber and later married Munroe Hill. The couple lived in Charlotte, VT, when the Genealogical Record was completed by Samuel Erastus Bentley, a grandson of Emma's brother Samuel.

Sorry I tripped over my fingers when keying in the birth date for Louis. 30 May 1883 is correct.

Walter Alonzo was only a few months old when his mother died. The fact that we have found no later information makes me think that he was adopted rather than raised in the foster care system as was his brother Louis.

Hope this helps. Grace
