What was your grandmother's sister's name please? As to how the Smyth name came to be: Matthew Blood Smyth born 1821, was the oldest son of William Blood Smyth b. March 26, 1797 by his wife Mary Massey. This William Blood Smyth was the oldest son of Matthew Blood Smyth, died August 20, 1820, by his wife, Dorothea Julia Ingram. Dorothea's uncle was Dr. William Smyth, Archbishop of Dublin. As a condition of her inheritance, she and her husband had to add Smyth to their name. Bindon Blood's book quotes: " The King has been graciously pleased to grant unto Matthew Blood of Castle Fergus etc. his Royal license and authority that he and his issue may take and use the surname and bear the arms of Smyth instead of those of Blood in compliance with the Will of William Smyth, late of the City of Dublin." Dorothea was the daughter of the Rev. Jacques Ingram and Mary Smyth. Mary Smyth was the daughter of Rev. John Smyth, who was the son of the Right Reverend Thomas Smyth.
