According to a bicentennial history of Virginia’s Powhatan County published in 1980, Simon Z. Block was summoned to court there in November 1825 and fined for having an unlawful assembly of slaves at his tavern or “ordinary.” Was Simon Z. Block, listed as between 50 and 60 years old on the 1830 census, of Powhatan County a member of the Jewish Block family with roots in Svihov, Bohemia? If so, what connection did Simon Z. Block of Powhatan County have to Simon Block Jr., who is reported to have moved from Richmond, Virginia, to Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, before 1820? Simon Block Jr. had a son named Zalma. Was Zalma Block carrying on a family tradition as keeper of the St. Charles Hotel in Cape Girardeau City? Was Simon Z. Block of Powhatan County Simon Zalma Block?
