Ella Blaylock MD
Ella Blaylock was born in the March quarter of 1860 in Ulverston registration district, daughter of William and Margaret Blaylock.She spent her childhood in Canada (her family having emigrated there c1861) and attended McGill University, and later the recently-founded medical college for women in Kingston, Ontario.She graduated in 1887 and moved to Nashua, New Hampshire in 1888.In 1898 she married an American lawyer Henry B Atherton (1835 – 1906), a widower with four children: Maud, Grace, Anna and Henry Francis.Henry and Ella had two children, Blaylock (born c1901) and Ives (born c1903).Ella practised medicine in Nashua for more than forty years, dying in 1933.She is said to be the first female doctor to perform an abdominal operation in New Hampshire.She was behind the founding of Nashua Memorial Hospital and was later a member of the hospital board.
