A(ndrew) (Hogg) Blaylock CWGC: Private S/18211 2nd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Died on 17 April 1918, aged 26 He is buried in Méteren Military Cemetery, grave II.F.184. Son of John Blaylock of Beattock, Dumfriesshire; husband of Helen Davidson Cuthbertson (formerly Blaylock) of 1, George Street, Langholm, Dumfriesshire. Andrew was born on 1 June 1891 at Canonbie, Dumfriesshire to John Blaylock (1867 – 1944) and Janet Hogg (1867 – 1921). He was married to Helen Davidson on 11 June 1915 at Moffat, Dumfriesshire. His widow Helen married Andrew McCracken Cuthbertson on 10 December 1920 at Langholm, Dumfriesshire. Arthur Blaylock CWGC: Private 3291 B Coy, 9th Royal Scots Died on 23 July 1916, aged 21 He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, pier and face 6D and 7D. Son of William and Annie Blaylock, 20, Lister Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester. His medal card seems to suggest that he died of wounds. A total of 1091 Royal Scots are commemorated on this memorial. In 1901, aged 6, he is living with his parents and siblings William, John, George, Annie, Christopher and Fred at 65, Union Street, Ardwick, Manchester. His father William, aged 39, born Manchester, is a butcher’s shop keeper, and his mother Annie, aged 39, is born Manchester. The marriage of William Blaylock and Annie Scarle was registered in the September quarter of 1882 in Warrington registration district. Daniel Blaylock born Northumberland enlisted Stormley residence Durham Private 21205 12th Durham Light Infantry Died on 26 January 1918, aged 39. CWGC: He is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, grave I.L.19A. Husband of Susannah Blaylock of 3, Allan Square, Tanfield Lea, Tantobie, Co Durham. He was born at Tanfield c1877, son of John Blaylock, coal miner, and of Mary Elliott, whose marriage was register in the June quarter of 1875 in the Newcastle registration district. In both 1891 and 1901 he was a coal miner. The marriage of Daniel Blaylock and Susannah Jones was registered in Lanchester registration district in the September quarter of 1904. George (Musgrave) Blaylock CWGC: Private 428178 7th Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment) Died on 24 June 1916, [aged 23] He is buried at Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), grave VI.F.8, near Ypres. Canadian Virtual War Memorial: born on 2 June 1893. Canadian attestation papers (New Westminster, 17 March 1915): born at Hayton; mother Mary. He is commemorated on the war memorial of St James’ Church, Hayton (see Channel 4’s Lost Generation website). He must be a brother of Joseph Blaylock and Robert Blaylock, both of Hayton (see below). Harry Blaylock CWGC: Private 33214 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers Died on 3 September 1916, aged 34 He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, pier and face 4A. Son of Mrs Eliza Brooks, 10, Great Nelson Street, Birch Street, West Gorton, Manchester. The marriage of an Eliza Blaylock to William Brookes was registered at Leeds in the September quarter of 1883. A total of 910 Royal Welsh Fusiliers are commemorated on this memorial. James Blaylock CWGC: Sailor, Mercantile Marine, SS Anglo Patagonian (London) Died on 11 July 1917, aged 40 Born in Galveston, USA He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. James Blaylock CWGC: Private 22010 1st King’s Own Scottish Borderers Died on 27 August 1917, aged 22 He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, panel 66 to 68. Son of William and Christina Blaylock of Esk Dale House, Marton, Blackpool (Lancashire). A total of 326 King’s Own Scottish Borderers are commemorated on this memorial. He is also commemorated on the war memorial at St Paul’s Church, Honister Avenue, Marton (see Channel 4’s Lost Generation website). James’ birth was registered in the March quarter of 1895 in Fylde registration district. He was the son of William Blaylock and Christina Robertson, whose marriage was registered at Longtown, Cumberland in the June quarter of 1891. In 1891 William, aged 27, born in Arthuret, Cumberland, was a gardener on his own account, after having been employed in 1881 as an apprentice gardener at Netherby Hall, Cumberland. In 1871 he was living with his parents William and Margaret at Netherby Street, Longtown. In 1901 he was a market gardener on his own account. James’ elder brother William had died on 26 May 1917 (see below). John James Blaylock born Castle Carrock, Cumberland enlisted Brampton, Cumberland residence Newtown, Irthington Corporal 26291 (Soldiers: A/Cpl) 11th Border Regiment Killed in action on 2 December 1917 CWGC: He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, panel 85 to 86. A total of 405 soldiers of the Border Regiment are commemorated on this memorial. He is also commemorated on the war memorial of St Kentigern’s Church, Irthington (see Channel 4’s Lost Generation website). The birth of a child of this name was registered in Brampton registration district in the December quarter of 1879. According to the 1881 census, he was the son of John and Elizabeth Blaylock, of Castle Carrock, Cumberland, south of Brampton. John William Blaylock born Flimby, Cumberland enlisted Newcastle Private 23/614 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers Killed in action on 3 July 1916, aged 22 CWGC: He is buried in Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, grave II.B.19. Son of Mason and Jane Blaylock, 27, Milburn Terrace, Bomarsund, Choppington, Northumberland. The marriage of Mason Blaylock to Jane Irving was registered in the December quarter of 1888 in Cockermouth registration district. In 1891 they were living at Waterloo Terrace, Flimby, Cockermouth. Mason, aged 26, was a coalminer, born in Hayton, Cumberland. Jane, aged 21, was born in Dearham, Cumberland. Their son Jonathan, aged 2, was born in Flimby. In 1901 they were still living in Flimby: Mason, 37, coal miner; Jane, 32; Jonathan,12; J, 7 (is this John William, whose birth is registered here in the December quarter of 1893?); Scary (sic) (female; perhaps Sarah?; if so, either Sarah Jane, whose birth was registered here in the June quarter of 1896, or Sarah Elizabeth, whose birth was registered here in the September quarter of 1896), 4; James, 1 (whose birth was registered here in the September quarter of 1899). Joseph Blaylock CWGC: Air Mechanic 3rd Class 142111 32nd Training Depot Station, RAF Died on 28 November 1918, aged 27 Buried in St James’ Churchyard, Hayton Son of William and Mary Ann Blaylock of Hayton. In 1901 he is the eldest child of William, 33, blacksmith on his own account, born Gilcrux, and Mary Ann, 33, born Distington, living at Hayton. His birth is registered in the December quarter of 1891 in Cockermouth registration district. The marriage of William Blaylock and Mary Ann Musgrave is registered in the June quarter of 1891 in Cockermouth registration district. Is Joseph perhaps the elder brother of Robert Blaylock of Hayton (see below)? Richard Blaylock born Darlington enlisted Darlington CWGC: Lance Corporal; Soldiers: Private 13465 13th Nothumberland Fusiliers Died of wounds on 7 February 1916 CWGC: He is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, grave II.C.116 A total of 164 Royal Northumberland Fusiliers are buried here. Is he perhaps the Richard Blaylock whose birth is registered in Darlington registration district in the June quarter of 1895? If so, in 1901 he is the son of Richard Blaylock, 37, ironworks blacksmith, born Heworth, and his wife Janet, 33, born Heworth, living at 27, Gurney Street, Darlington. Robert (Alexander) Blaylock CWGC: Private 23568 11th Royal Scots Died on 14 July 1916, [aged 40] He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, pier and face 6D and 7D. Robert was the son of William Blaylock (1844 – 1901) and Margaret Turner (1848 – 1911). He was born on 15 November 1875 at Echo Bank, Liberton, Edinburgh. In 1891 he was an apprentice baker; in 1901 he was a journeyman baker. His twin brother James had died on 17 November 1875. Robert Blaylock CWGC: Private 13919 Durham Light Infantry Died of meningitis on 24 September 1919, aged 29 He is buried in St Lawrence churchyard, Stratford-sub-Castle, nr Salisbury 148 (see Channel 4’s Lost Generation website). Son of Mr and Mrs P Blaylock of Gateshead; husband of Lily Blaylock, Church Street, Holbeach, Lincolnshire. Robert Blaylock born Hayton, Cumberland enlisted Wigton, Cumberland Gunner 56786 C Battery, 103rd Brigade Royal Field Artillery Died of wounds on 18 August 1917. CWGC: He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, grave XVII.AA.18. A total of 720 soldiers of the Royal Field Artillery are buried here. He is commemorated on the war memorial of St James’ Church, Hayton (see Channel 4’s Lost Generation website). Is he perhaps the younger brother of Joseph Blaylock of Hayton (see above)? If so, his birth is registered in the March quarter of 1895 in Wigton registration district. William Blaylock born Burnley enlisted Burnley Private 20169 6th East Lancashire Regiment Killed in action on 19 October 1917, aged 19 CWGC: He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, panel 19. Son of Mrs Mary Ann Blaylock, 10, Godly Street, Burnley. He is, in all probability, the son of George Blaylock, born in Brampton, Cumberland, and of Mary Ann Hodgson, born in Malton, Yorkshire, married in the December quarter of 1887 in Middlesbrough R D. His birth was registered in Burnley in the December quarter of 1898. William (Edward) Blaylock born Blackpool enlisted Blackpool Private 55102 2nd Royal Welsh Fusiliers Formerly 21494, Dragoon Guards Killed in action on 8 March 1917, aged 20 CWGC: He is buried in Péronne Communal Cemetery Extension, grave III.J.36. Son of George and Nellie Blaylock, 92, Cocker Street, Blackpool. William’s birth was registered in the June quarter of 1896 in Fylde registration district. The marriage of his parents George Blaylock and Ellen Bolger was registered in the June quarter of 1895 in Fylde registration district. In 1891 George, aged 23, born in Arthuret, Cumberland, was a joiner. (Note that he was a brother of William Blaylock and a son of William and Margaret Blaylock of Longtown.) In 1901 George, aged 33, born in Longtown, Cumberland, was a joiner; Ellen, aged 31, was born in Ireland. W(illiam) Blaylock enlisted Blackpool Private 241757 2/5th Battalion, King’s Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) Died of wounds on 26 May 1917, aged 24 CWGC: He is buried in St Paul burial ground, Marton. Son of William and Christina Blaylock, Esk Dale House, Marton (Lancashire). He is commemorated on the war memorial at St Paul’s Church, Honister Avenue, Marton (see Channel 4’s Lost Generation website). See above on his younger brother James. William’s birth was registered in the December quarter of 1892 in Fylde registration district. William Edward Blaylock born Calthwaite, Cumberland enlisted Penrith, Cumberland Private 3937 5th Battalion, Border Regiment Killed in action on 29 August 1916 CWGC: He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, pier and face 6A and 7C He is also commemorated on Penrith War Memorial Arch, at the gateway to Castle Park, Penrith (see Channel 4’s Lost Generation website) and on the war memorial of St Andrew’s church, Penrith (see references on www.zeonlair.demon.co.uk/famtree/war.htm). His birth is registered in the June quarter of 1895 in Penrith registration district.
