JOSYNTJE wife of Gerrit Hendrickse (Blauvelt)

I have been trying to identify the parents of the Josyntje, who is seen in various records as Josyntje Jans, Josyntje Thomas and Josyntje van Hoboken.

She married first Peter Wesselszen van Norden, 19 May 1669 at NY DRC, and when widowed remarried Gerrit Hendricksen (Blauvelt)22 October 1679 at the same church. Her last marriage was to Anthony Sarley, 7 February 1684/5, again at NY DRC.

A detailed study of the baptisms of her children shows a relationship with Mayken/Marrite van Hoboken and also with Harmen van Hoboken, but the specific nature of that relationship isn't clear.

One of Josyntje's marriage records reveals that she was born in Utrecht, and analysis of her dates of marriage and childbearing years indicate that she was born ca 1653.

Mayken Van Hoboken was older and her marriage records says she was from New York.

In varous places you see Josyntje identified as the daughter of Thomas Thomasse and Josyntje Verhagen, and further identified as the nine year old daughter who arrived in NA with Josyntje Verhagen. There are places where she is not only identified as the daughter of Thomas Thomasse and Josyntje Verhagen, her father is also identified as a Van Dyck.

However,in an article by William Hoffman: "Josyntje Verhagen and Her Descendants," TAG vol 25 (1949) pp 192-194 Hoffman noted the existence of a Josyntje Thomas [of Utrecht] who married Pieter Wesselszen in 1669, but stated that no connection with [Josyntje Verhagen] is apparent."

I might add for my own part, that no connection of Josyntje to Van Dyck is apparent either, at least to me.

Josyntje was seen with the patronymic Thomas, but she was also seen as Josyntje JANS, which name cannot be explained by the name of a husband, so it must be derived from her patronym which was either Josyntje "Thomas Jans" or Josyntje "Jans Thomas", thus assigning her as the daughter of a Thomas Thomasse doesn't quite fit the bill.

Most helpful of all is the fact that she is seen in association with two people using the name van Hoboken, and was identified with that surname as well.

Unfortunately this has not been helpful enough for me to figure out who her parents were!

If there is any Blauvelt descendant out there who has gone into this Josyntje, and the problem of identifying her, in any depth, I'd surely like to talk to you and perhaps compare notes.

Regards,

Sharilyn Whitaker
