What a mess.I think people have been making assumptions based on the census that confuse people with the same name.I have found "William" Blanton mentioned in Augusta, Washington, Russell, and Lee counties from 1767 to 1803 in various court documents, petitions, land records, and tax lists. These references all appear to be the same person since the area kept being reorganized and there is only one Blanton mentioned. However, in the 1795 tax records the name used is "John Sr." beside another who simply called "--- Blanton"This apparently means the second entry had the same first name, i.e. John, junior. So for the legal purposes of this tax list William seems to go by his official name to show his relationship to his son to avoid confusion.Later the younger John is found in the Powell River Valley with land claims and census data.It seems to me we have here "John William" senior and John junior. No other Blanton names appear until 1810 census when George is included. In 1820 George appears in Scott County (newly carved from Lee and Russel Counties) and has a young man named William living ther as well. This seems to be his son.Back in Lee Co., John is still present also with a young married William living there too. This appears to be his son.No others around. So where are all the other children or "John William"?Gone to Kwentucky.
