DNA testing should tell which Blanton Family you belong to. Once it is narrowed down, it will be easier for researchers to try to find a connection. The four are: Tidewater Blanton, SW Virginia Blanton, Womack-Blantons and Kershaw SC Blantons.
1) Go to http://www.dna.ancestry.comhttp://www.dna.ancestry.com and order a Paternal Lineage Test. The 33-marker test is sufficient and is a much better value on a cost-per-marker basis, but more markers are always helpful.
(2) You can join the group project at any time. After joining, your results will automatically be posted in the group table.
(3) Many people refrain from joining until they have the results, in case there is a non-paternal event. These are events such as informal adoptions, out-of-wedlock children, duped daddies, etc in which the surname is taken from someone other than the biological father. Simply search with your results to see if there are any Blanton close matches (31/33 or 43/46 or better) before joining.
I will be glad to help you if you have any questions, especially after you receive your results.
