Blanton and Womack, Prince Edward Co, VA
I found these Blanton references in indexes to Prince Edward Co, VA OrderBooks:
1771-1773
Thomas Blanton / Buchanan Hastie & Co - p.121, 162
Joshua Blanton / Benjamin Watkins - p.245
Thomas Blanton / Thomas Watkins - p.119
1774-1781
Joshua Blanton / William King - p.76
Joshua Blanton / John H Leitch - p.374
These are just the indexes, and they list parties to civil and criminal cases.I will be ordering the actual records soon.
I research the Womack family.I am aware of the Womack and Blanton connection through Abraham Womack and Ann Blanton being the parents of Archibald Blanton. The DNA evidence, combined with the Rev Lee memoirs, is pretty convincing. It has also been accepted that Abraham Womack and Ann Blanton were the parents of Thomas Womack, who moved to Burke Co, NC and later Rutherford Co, NC.I am starting to question this.
Thomas Womacks's family has been put together through largely circumstantial evidence. That said, Thomas's first known child, Anderson Womack, was born in 1765 in VA.Son Abner C Womack was born in 1769 in VA, and son William was born 1773 in NC, so it appears Thomas moved from VA to NC between 1769 and 1773.
The hypothesis I am working on is that Thomas Womack and Thomas Blanton were separate men.In other words, Ann Blanton had a son named Thomas Blanton before the affair with Abraham Womack which produced Archibald Blanton. Also, Abraham Womack had a son named Thomas Womack before the affair.I could be wrong, but I think I am right.
Abraham's father was Thomas Womack, so it makes sense he would name a son Thomas.Abraham also had a brother Thomas who features in the early records of Amelia and Prince Edward Counties, so it is often difficult to sort the Womacks with the same given names. This entire line is proved in the chancery court records of Charlotte Co, VA, where Abraham's brother William died in 1790 with a large estate, but no heirs, so his estate fell to siblings, most of whom were dead, so then to their children, etc.Abraham (brother of William) is listed as having died in Lincoln Co, NC, and his children are listed as Abraham Womack of Caswell Co, NC; Elizabeth Womack wife of Charles Cauthorn; Mary Womack wife of John Spradling; and Abner Womack (whose Rev War pension file reveals he was born in 1764 in Prince Edward); the Cauthorns and Spradlings had dealings with the Womacks in Prince Edward.Neither Thomas Womack nor Archobald Blanton are listed as Abraham's children.Archibald Blanton is not surprising, since I do not think he could have inherited as an illegitimate child. However, Thomas Womack should have been listed as a child of Abraham, assuming he was legitimate. The only reason I can think that he was not listed is that he died before 1790; however then his share should have fallen to his children. So a mystery here.
I have not seen the court records indexed above yet, but they show Thomas Blanton in Prince Edward between 1771 and 1773.Assuming I have the right Thomas Blanton, this places him in Prince Edward in this time frame, during which Thomas Womack likely moved to NC.
I also find it odd that "Vestry Book of St. Patrick's Parish, Prince Edward County, Virginia" refers to Thomas Blanton by that name as late as 1768 if this Thomas later became Thomas Womack, given that Thomas Womack had started having children in 1765.
I will report on what I find in the Order Books about thse Blantons.
