"D.K." means "Don't Know."
The NC Archives has almost all of the NC county records. However, without Mary's surname, it might be hard to know where to look. There doesn't seem to be a marriage bond for Mary and William in NC. I have the Archive's index on microfiche.
I would, however, look for William in the Prince Edward and Nottoway, VA tax lists from 1830-1840. I have several sons of James Blanton who counted with him in 1830, but who don't show up in the 1850 census. They may have been in another household in 1840, since they weren't with James' widow.
Taxable males will show up by name on the tax rolls even if they are in someone else's household in the census.
Most other Blantons in VA at the time are accounted for, so it probably wouldn't be useful to search other counties.
The lists, or microfilms, are at the Library of Virginia and the LDS Library. They can be borrowed through Family History Centers. People are grouped by the first letter of the surname and are usually in 2 or 3 districts. It is a little bit of a hassle to find surnames, but it is an excellent supplement to the pre-1850 censuses.
By the way, the NC Archives has a gem that few people know about. It is the State copy (probably copied from the one that went to the county) of the 1850 census. It will often list the county of birth for NC natives. Only in a few Federal copies was this retained, notably in Prince Edward, VA, where it is a tremendous aid.
