Early Blanton Education
I have seen many people, especially researchers of 20-30 years ago, repeat this old line about Judge George Blanton and Reubin Blanton: They must have been born or educated in England because they were literate.
These researchers lack a basic education in the history of the time. They are totally ignorant of the rapid spread of common education in PA, VA, and points south and west, resulting from the influx of Scots-Irish Presbyterians in the early 1700's.
This effect is documented in Chapter 7 of "The Great Wagon Road" by Parke Rouse, Jr. This book is must reading for Blanton researchers since it is essentially the tale of migrations from PA and VA soutward and westward. It gives the history of the area during the 1700's and early 1800's. Thus researchers have a historical context in which to view the family migrations.
