About Blankenshipweb.com

I’ve gotten a few E-mails about the Transcriptions on the web site.

http://www.blankenshipweb.com/

So I’ll take the time here to give all of you a sort of Key to how I’m doing them.

First of all I don’t have a proofreader, the wife doesn’t do Genealogy. But I should be getting enough right so that you can Find the family your looking for.

Not all census takers get it right either, if they have an error I keep it, The goal is to copy what ever is there. That also puts spelling out the window.

The Census format is different from year to year, but I have tried to format them as close to the same format as I can for the web site,

The header;
Census year, Town, Twp, Co, State, Page #, Dwlg #, Date,

Not all of these items show on each page, but the position on the roll is by Location, so the index service knows where the record is from.

The page #, is the location on the roll, again they often don’t show on the page, but it helps when looking for it on the roll,

Dwlg # is a two part, first part is Dwelling, Second part is family (dweller), This helps to locate on the page which one I’m looking at.

Date is handy for when you find two similar records, Did they have enough time to move from one location to another, or are they two different families.
I use the first date, the day the page was started, it may not be on the page some times they only dated one side, the A or B page,

Most records only spell out the last name for the Head of Household, and then use a dido line for the rest of the family. I keep what ever spelling I find. That way if your using an index service to fine them you’ll know the spelling to use.

As for given names, they can be first or second, or nick or pet, Etc. and things like bad script, faded out, Ink blots, written over, Blacked out, miss spellings, all make it hard to get it correct some times, I will try to give the letters that I can make out.

IF a field is blank, I’ll put a dash line in it’s place IE, -----,
IF I can’t make it out I’ll use periods IE. ……,
IF it’s a single letter or number field I’ll use the ?

I put age/date fields first,        IE, 34, Dec 1868,
then Single Letter Fields,        IE, W, F, M,
then Double Letter fields,        IE, VA-KY-TN,
then Word fields,               IE, Head, Blacksmith, Own Shop,

I try to keep each person to one line, so I use the following Tricks,

SSon,               Sept Son,
GDau              Grand Daughter,
GGson              Great Grand Son,
ASon              Adopted Son,
SisterL        Sister in Law,
HBrother,        Half Brother,

If there is an address that I can make out, I’ll put in, might be fun to go see if the building is still there,

This project has taken a few years to do,
Frank Blankenship, sent me the 1790-1850 Census records, Thanks Frank,
Don Blankenship, sent me the 1880 Census records, Thanks Don,
And there a lot of others that have sent in single records as well,
I’ve done the 1860, 1870, and 1900 Census records,
And I’m currently transcribing the 1910 and 1920 Census records, up to TN right now, So should have them done in a few more months.

Also know that Muriel Murray Sent me the Parish records from England, Thanks Muriel,

If you can’t fine a record that you looking for, it doesn’t mean that they are not there it only means that no one has sent it to me or I didn’t find it. YET!

If you find anything that I don’t have yet, please send it too me, Just know that I do have a lot of stuff that has already been sent to me, that I haven’t had a chance to get to yet.
IE. I only half of the WV Death records done so far.
I also have a large file full of stuff from Diane Renfro, she keeps digging all the time.
But I will get to it all in time.

I know that I’ve missed more then a few names, and to them I’m sorry, but I do have a list of submitters on the web site. (most are the ones that took the time to send me their files, Thanks to all of them.).

Once I finish Transcribing the 1910 and 1920 Census records, I’ll start going thru them and putting in my ID notes, When I’m Doing that, I use the World connect files to help ID folks. I’ve noticed that more then a few have copied from my file and posted it again, that’s ok, the problem is that when it comes to the American Blankenships, (The false parent that I use in my file to connect everything,) That part of my file is always changing, as new information comes to light. I move people off and add others to it. So Please, if you have an old American Blankenships in you file come back and up date it.

Also as a reminder, I use the Blank(i)nship List at rootsweb to keep everyone up to date on what I’m working on.

JIM
