From C.E.Banks (1966), writing about the History of Martha's Vineyard, and A.S. Thompson, writing about The Drake Family of New Hampshire, one could deduce the following. John Bland-Smith was probably the son of Anthony and Adrian (_____) Bland of Colchester. Anthony died in 1613 and Adrian married a man named Smith. (Adrian later married for the third time Jemermiah Norcross.) The son John Bland perhaps adopted the alias Smith from his mother's second marriage. Whatever the origin, he used the name Smith at Martha's Vineyard.
Much speculation here, and I know nothing else to add.
