Information on Allen Blanchard of NY 1840(?) -1916
My father, Raymond Blanchard, died in 1998.He never had any relatives, except for his mother and a few old cousins on his mother's side of the family. His mother, Margaret McCartin (nee Hunter)married Allen Blanchard in 1904 at Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary parrish in Brooklyn. She was a widow and her husband was much older than her.My father was born in 1906 and he was the only child from both her marriages to survive through childhood.
All that I know about my grandfather, Allen Blanchard, is what was on his death certificate. He died on April 1, 1916, and his birth date isn't given, but his age is listed as 76.It says he was born in the US and that his length of residence in the city of New York was "life". His father is listed as Cornelius Blanchard, born in the US, and his mother's maiden name is given as "Jane --".This could be her last name or her first name.
My father never knew his father growing up.My grandmother was a fanatic against alcohol, and I gather my grandfather did not keep a promise to reform, so she left him.He is supposed to have been in the Merchant Marine, and he had an Engineer's license.Grandma just threw out all that stuff when my father was a young man. Also, at one point she is supposed to have said something about my grandfather having relatives upstate.
