NC Blalocks of Montgomery/Stanly Counties
I have found what I believe to be proof of inaccuracy in one of the major Blalock theories taken as fact by many.
I would be grateful for feedback as to any errors or inconsistencies.
Blalock NOTES Condensed: A discussion of one Blalock theory
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A Blalock family theory which is found online and in some libraries across the country is that Blalocks in Montgomery/Stanly Co NC originated with immigrant Thomas Blacklock of 1622 Jamestown, whose descendant migrated to Cumberland County NC in the 1700's.
The connection of Blalocks in Montgomery County to the Blalocks in Cumberland County centers on the following:
1. Richard Blalock + Rachel Harden came from VA to Cumberland Co 1757-1761
-------Evidence found:
i.1757 Richard Blalock witness to deed: Louisa Co VA DeedBk D Aug 1757.
ii. 1761 Richard Blalock purchased from McNeill: Cumberland Co NC DeedBk1 p461.
2a. William Blalock, son of Richard Blalock and Rachel Harden, was born before 1761 and died before 1790 in Cumberland Co, NC.
-------Evidence found:
i.deceased son William is named in Richard's will dated 1801;
ii.Richard left VA after 1757;
iii. Richard bought land in Cumberland Co in 1761;
iv. William Blalock is found in taxlists in the same district as Richard in 1777 and 1778 proving birth before 1761
v.no William Blalock is found in 1790 census in Cumberland Co.
2b. THEORY: said William Blalock married Lucy Anne Womack, daughter of William, in 1775 in NC.
-------No evidence found but not disproven:
i.no will in Mitchells for a William Blalock before 1801
ii.only one estate file for William before 1801; it is 1797 William, identified as the son of Charles (Richard's son);died as a teenager, unmarried no issue.
iii. no widow Blalock in 1790 C'landCo census.
3a. said William Blalock (d bef 1790) had a son named William born before 1790
-------Evidence found:
i.'William son of dec'd son William' named in Richard Blalock's will dated 1801 proven 1805.
ii. 1806 deed in Cumberland Co signed by William sold same to Morgan.
3b. THEORY: said son William David BLALOCK (
David Blalock and wife are in the Montgomery County census in 1800, while William Blalock, grandson of Richard, still lives in Cumberland County in 1806.
--------Evidence:
These are all the Williams and Davids Blalock found in Montgomery Co after 1790; they are 5 different people.
David[1] born before 1765 see 1810 census [EAST of PeeDee River].
David[2] born c1775-1780 see 1800-1870 censuses Montgomery Co (West of Peedee) and StanlyCo.
David[3] born c1808 see censuses and cemetery list.
William born c1766-1770 see 1810 and 1830 census Montgomery EAST.
William's son David[4] born c1792 see pension files, married martha dennis.
The only possible match to the Cumberland Co William is "David[2]"; following him in the census we find:
Montgomery 1800 David Blalock 16-25 wife 16-25 both born 1775-1784
Montgomery 1810 D Blalock 26-44 wife 16-25 [sic]
Montgomery 1820 none
Montgomery West of Peedee 1830 David Blalock 50-60 wife 50-60 both born 1770-1780
Montgomery West of Peedee 1840 David Blalock 60-70 wife 60-70
Stanly 1850 widow Mary Blalock 70
Stanly 1860 Mary not found
-------CONCLUSION:
"David[2]" Blalock was likely the husband of the widow Mary Blalock, and both were residents of Mont'yCo in 1800.
William Blalock, grandson of Richard Blalock and resident of Cumberland County in 1806, CANNOT be the same person.
The family tree which merges these two into the same person is inaccurate and the origin of our Stanly County Blalocks remains a mystery.
