Linda:I can shed some light on the two John Blalocks. I have been doing research on the Blalocks (lightly)for about 10 years as I have been researching my own family for about 15 years-I married a Blalock. I live within 40 miles of where the Blalocks have been since 1743 in Johnson (Wake), Person, Granville, Caswell, Orange and southern VA.The John Blalock who went to S.C. (first-many others followed)and the John Blalock who went to Wilkes Co., and both died in those respective counties, are different Johns. They were related I have absolutely no doubt.
The breakthrough came when I found the Blalocks in Johnson County and there are numerous land deed records there.
John Blalock in Johnson Co. (current northern Wake Co.- and it borders southern Granville Co. on the southeast corner of Person and previous Orange Co.)is the one who went to S.C. He bought land in Johnson Co. first in 1743 and his wife was Sarah.John and Sarah received a land grant in 1752 and both signed the deed. They were there for a little over 20 years - I can't say exactly when they moved, but when they moved and shortly thereafter, some of those in Johnson(Wake)Co. moved to South Carolina also, as well as several other families from Wake. One of the notes in the deeds stated "John Blalock and his sons built a road from his (John)'s mill on the three prongs of Barton Creek to Lick Creek" - now this area was wilderness so the road was likely cutting the trees. The three prongs of Barton Creek come together at the Neuse R. (and this area is currently under water as there is a large dam with a huge lake area)and is called Falls of the Neuse. He and the other Blalocks there have many records associated with the Abbots and the Sims families. Then in 1747 Millington (the elder Millington who died in Wake Co.)sold his land which he had bought in Brunswick Co., VA just a few years earlier when he lived in Hanover and moved to where John and Sarah were. Millington's wife was Mourning and she died there around 1801 - I can't say that she was his first wife - but she was his last wife. Other names mentioned in the deed records with John and Sarah, and Millington are: Lewis Blalock - a chain carrier mentioned first, Isham Blalock, Matthew Blalock, Wallis Blalock, Charles Blalock, Buckner Blalock, Hardy Blalock etc. - the latter few of those mostly in the records during the latter part and after the Rev. War. The Sims family were also in Hanover, VA and Matthew Sims came to Johnson Co. with his father William Sims then they moved to Surry Co. George Sims was in Louisa Co. and he and Zebiah were in Granville Co. (about 20 miles north of where John and Sarah and the first Millington were) by 1764 and wrote the famous "Nutbush Papers." Johnson Sims moved to Albemarle Co., SC. Isham Sims was born in 1725 and died in Wake Co in 1791. When William Abbot's will was made out in Wake Co. in 1777, Millington and Isham Blalock signed as witness.Earlier, in October of 1765 John Blalock and wife Sarah sold to Thomas Williams land "being part of land granted to John Blalock and by said John Blalock and wife Sarah sold."In 1766 on "John Blalock's corner near Blalock's line to the Neuse;" in 1767 Falls of Neuse in a sale by someone else John Blalock, Millington Blalock, and Sally Sims signed as witnesses; in 1767 Millington Blalock witnessed another sale; in 1769 another entry "being part of tract granted to John Blalock."
It appears that John and Sarah (if she was still living)were not there anymore, and this is likely when they moved to S.C. Lewis does not appear anymore, but he signed as a witness to one of John's land transaction in the 1750's.
Later in 1785 Charles Simms sold land on the south side of the Neuse asjacent to Millington Blalock, Thomas Bell and Murray Sims. In 1786 Charles Blalock sold to John Mayse "100 acres south of the Great Fall Creek at the mouth of Buckner Blalock's special branch...it being part of land where Millington Blalock father of Charles Blalock now lives and was conveyed to Charles by his father Millington." Millington and Charles had witness a sale to Abraham Abbott in 1784.In 1787 272 acres of land was sold by Sheriff Jones as land of Millington Blalock on both sides of Great Fall Creek. This area now is called Falls of the Neuse. In 1778 mention is made of Isham Blalock's improvements. In 1808 a little further south in what became Cumberland Co. on Black Creek, mention is made of "lands of Hardy Blalock."
In 1741 in Brunswick Co. (at the time just northeast and over the VA border from Granville Co., Halifax Co., N.C.) Richard and Millington Blalock both signes as witness together on a deed, but there are only a few notes on these two in Brunswick Co.VA (south of the River and almost on the N.C. border). There is in the early 1800's a Millington Sims in southern Brunswick Co., VA!In this VA county there were numerous names of individuals who were there for just a few years prior to showing up in the northern N.C. counties - just waiting until land came up for sale or was being granted in N.C. In 1741 "Michael Young to Richard Blalock of St. Martin's parrish in Hanover Co. 125 acres on the N. side of Roanoke in Mecklenburg Co., VA signed by Millington Blalock as witness. Richard and his family then appear in what became Cumberland Co. and they had fairly clear wills and I have given that info. previously. As stated previous, a deed is quoted "Millington Blalock of Johnson Co., NC" sold his land in Brunswick Co. (Brunswick and Mecklenburg Cos.,VA are on the N.C. border).
In the 1700's the other John and David, Jeremiah and Caide Blalock are all on the very same creek in Granville Co.and I shall name a few as follows: In 1770 George Hudspeth sold to John Blalock for 62 pounds, 10 shillings about 200 acres on Low Ground Creek (runs into Fishing Creek)"where George formerly dwelt...from Wilkerson's land to William Bradford's land." In 1772 John Blalock "planter and waggoner" for 200 and 90 pounds, 13 shillings and 8 pence sold a track of land on the waters of Low Ground Creek from Wilkersons to Bradfords of about 100 acres lying on the west side of Fishing Creek, as he was indebted to George Alston. In 1783 John Blalock of Surry Co., NC sold to Jeremiah Blalock of Granville Co for 80 pounds a tract of land on Low Ground Creek. In 1798 Jeremiah Blalock of the Co. of York, S.C. sold 200 acres in Granville Co. to Joseph Beuill of Granville Co. for 80 pounds on the waters of Low Ground Creek.Jeremiah's mark was not an X but a "B." In 1801 David Blalock of Granville Co. sold to Dempsey Sutton for 50 pounds 100 acres of land on the road adjacent to this creek. As you know, Jeremiah married William Bradford's daughter in Granville Co. in 1781 - not 1782 as she later stated.Mary Blalock had to sign two of John's land transactions in Granville prior to their moving to Surry Co. clearly identifying her as his wife and a Hudspeth sold him the first plot of land in Granville Co.
In 1782 in Granville Co. David Blalock married Frances Champion, in 1781 in Granville Jeremiah married Lucy Bradford and in 1772 Barbara Blalock married Jeremiah Lynch with John Blalock signing as bondsman. She was likely his sister.
Also in Granville Co., David Burford (not the elder David Burford who had died in Hanover Co.) in 1779 married Margaret Beam.Later in Person Co., a David Burford submitted himself for ordination for ministry at the Baptist Church that the Person Co. Millington and Thomas Blalock and their children belonged.
In Wilkes Co., NC John Blalock's will lists "9 surviving children," and son Caide deceased heirs.
the 9 surviving children:
David, John Jr., Catey Wallace, Elizabeth, Gibson, Mary, Patty, Lucy, Ruthey.
This is getting too long, but just a few short notes about Hanover/Louisa.
I have been sent copies of the original store financial records of charges by the second John Blalock and his sons Richard and John Jr., and then Richard Jr. and Kade, and Sarah Blalock (this could either be Richard Srs. wife Sarah or John Jr.s wife Sarah.)These records are very clear and items detailed. One note says John Blalock of Cub Creek. A vestry book printed from that Parrish also lists someone assigned to look after Mary Blalock, widow in 1729. John Sr. Blalock then died in 1743. The vestry bookalso states that Richard Blalock married Sarah Kade (sometimes written Cade). Richard and John also owned land by 1704. Richard Blalock Jr. and John Jr. are both charging items by 1735.Sarah and Kade are charging items in 1752.Richard Jr. was married to a Rachael. So the Richard who some state was born about 1722 - if they are right- would be the third Richard. There is also an Abbott charging items.
I could go on, but I have overstayed my welcome on this page today.
