I went to the N.C. Archives this week, and read all the original wills of the early Blalocks. One of them was very interesting and I post this especially for the Jared Blalock family who moved to TN. In the folder (it is not on microfilm) it states that David S. Blalock of Orange Co. departed this life April 1842.His wife Candiss petitioned the court for commissioners to be named so she could receive her dower and maintenance for a year. In 1845 there was a petition by James, Candiss (widow), Hartwell, H.H., Joseph, Jarrett and Mindy to settle the estate. In 1846 there was an official letter "petition" from Jared Blalock of Caldwell Co. in the State of Kentucky mailed to Hartwell Blalock of Orange Co., NC naming Hartwell "my attorney" to receive and collect "in my name, any and all monies coming to me from the estate of my deceased father David S. Blalock in N.C."Jared (Jarrett, Garrett spelled several ways in court records before he left Orange Co.) wrote a handwritten note on the letter (petition). "Dear Brothers"...Come to this country, plenty of bread and meat..Do not stay in that poor country and starve. Tell H.H. Blalock that he must come..."The estate was settled and each of them received $12.00.
So, Hartwell's father was not William (unless there was another Hartwell). Since Hartwell in one of the census records states he was born in VA and was the son of Charles S., when I go to Brunswick Co., VA in the next few months, I will check for info. Of course that could be a mistake on the census report which happened a lot.
The earlier Charles Blalock of Orange Co. who died in 1771 whose wife was Ann was in that same area. It does not list his children and he died before any census records were taken. Ann received her dower. He is equated several times on deed records with the Wake Co. Blalocks, however. The elder Millington of Wake Co. did have a son named Charles, but he was listed in deeds well after the Charles in Orange Co. died in 1771, and in one record in Wake Co., the deed states land given to Charles by his father Millington (the elder Millington whose wife was Mourning who died in Wake Co. in 1801).
There were at least two Charles Blalocks in the Richard Blalock group who were in Cumberland Co., NC (not necessarily the same area where Cumberland Co. is today) early on prior to the Rev., and they are equated with the two Richards. The Richard who married Sarah Kade (Cade) in Hanover VA already owned land before 1710 and Richard Jr. is listed in those store records as an adult by the 1740's - so the two Richards in N.C. would be the second and third Richard.Richard (second) wife was named Rachael. Kade, son of the first Richard, was charging items also by the 1740's. David who signed the elder John Blalock's will in Hanover, VA in 1743 was listed in one record as the son of Richard.
In 1785 in Brunswick Co., VA Benjamin Mosely sold some land and William Blalock bought it. In 1790 in Brunswick, the estate of William Rawlins was sold, witnessed by Jesse Blalock, and some money from the sale was paid to William Blalock. In 1792 in Brunswick Co., VA, David Blalock witnessed the will of Aaron Smith. In 1793 the appraisal of the estate of Aaron Smith was done by William Blalock. This sounds like the ones who came to Orange Co. later than the other Blalocks, and the William is clearly not the two who were in Orange (then Person) early on.
There is no doubt, in my mind, that they were all from the Hanover/Louisa County, VA group. The merchant store list for the early 1700's was a major find.
