I agree with you that William Blalock is the father of the Hartwell Blalock group. He is not the same William who was in N.C. in the 1770's, 1780's and 1790's, however. William Blalock and Jesse Blalock were transacting in Brunswick Co., VA, long after the other Blalocks left and were still there through the 1780's - too often not to have also lived there. The elder Millington Blalock sold his land in Brunswick Co., VA and moved to Johnson Co., NC (current northern Wake Co)- the land record records this)in the late 1740's where his brother John Blalock and wife Sarah were. William and Jesse from Brunswick then show up in Orange Co.in 1800 on the tax records. Hartwell Blalock in the census record states he was born in VA and he was in the very area that that William and Jesse were. Hartwell and his wife Martha had many children. One of them I believe to be the one who died during the Civil War, and who is buried in Durham, but I don't know any of the descendants so I couldn't offer any advice for the gentleman who posted for relatives on the Blalock web page. In 1807 in Orange Co. Samuel Stubbins sold William Blalock 54 acres of land on the waters of Seven Mile Creek bordering Dock Umstead's land. There were at least three William Blalocks in this time period, and later there were many!
John Blalock of Granville Co. in the 1760's and 1770's and equated in the same area as Jeremiah and David Blalock (not the same David who died in Orange in the 1770's and not the David who was in northern Wake and moved to southern Wake in the late 1790's or early 1800's)wife was named Mary in a land transaction. When he left Granville it states John of Surry Co., NC and he sold his 253 acres of land to Jeremiah Blalock and "paid off... houses, buildings and orchards."Jeremiah then later sold land and moved to S.C.
John Blalock of Johnson (northern Wake) and his wife Sarah sold their land much earlier and I believe him to be the John who moved to S.C., as several of the families around them in Wake moved to S.C. at the same time. His brother Millington stayed in Wake Co. and is the aforementioned Millington who was married to Mourning who died there in 1801. At least one of Millington's children moved to Cumberland Co., where two Richard Blalocks had moved much earlier-these Richard Blalocks also being from Hanover/Louisa Co's. Richard for a brief period was also in Brunswick Co., VA (which was a temporary county in VA when many left the "eastern shore" prior to land possibilities in the Carolinas).
Millington Blalock (the elder) was the son of John Blalock of Hanover/Louisa.After Millington's wife Mourning died Buckner Blalock (listed as one of his sons) moved to S.C. where his uncle John had moved.
David Blalock who was married to Ann bought land on Terrell Creek in Orange Co. in 1766 (but that area became Alamance Co.) but there is no record that he lived there. After he died in the 1770's Ann sold this land. Millington Blalock witnesses this earlier sale.
In 20 years of doing genealogy research, it is worthy to note that first sons were almost always named after the mother's father. This held true through the mid to late 1800's. I have never seen this vary - sometimes it would be the last name and sometimes the first name. The only exceptions I have seen are when there was a dead or single uncle, brother, cousin who had no sons and then that name was given. It was usually the third, fourth and fifth sons who were named for grandfathers.
Millington Blalock of northern Wake did not have a son named Millington (uless the later Millington was his son). The later Millington is my husband's ancestor through his son Robert. I believe his father to be John of northern Wake, but one of the other Williams is a possibility. There was a William who deserted during the Rev. War, and I will try and get that record.
