"Thanks. Per my chart, your Clara Smith (daughter of John Smith and Ann Smith) married both George Blakey and Garrett Daniel. Do you have any idea why this Mr. Daniel had the given name of "Garrett?"" No - I have a long line of Garretts also, but did not check further on this line since mine was the Blakey one. This is most of what I had: Ann DANIEL was born on 21 Feb 1742. Middlesex records,p. 155: Ann, dau. of Garrett and Clara Daniel born Feb. 21, 1742. A second entry p. 195 indicates the death of Garrett:”Garritt Daniel d. Jan ye 28, 1744. Middlesex Will Bk C 1740-1748 p 234 - Clara Daniel, administratrix of Garrett Daniel, decd. 7 May 1745 Middlesex Will Bk d 1748-1760 p320 - Maurice Smith, guardian to Anna Daniel, orphan of Garrett Daniel 10 Oct 1754 The Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex County, VA from 1653 to 1812 - Society of Colonial Dames of America: p 155 Ann Daughter of Garritt & Clary Daniel born Febr 21st 1742 p195 Garret Daniel died Janry ye 28th 1744/5 "I don't know what your records show, but it APPEARS to me that the Ruth who married the above Thomas Smith....after Ann Petty died....was Ruth SMITH....a daughter of the John Smith who married (apparently) Elizabeth Berry and second (apparently) Mrs. Martha (Butcher) Parsons....and Ruth was apparently a daughter of this John Smith and his second wife Martha Butcher. Any comments on this Ruth and/or this "third Smith group" that was in the same general area of VA?" I only have a Ruth with no last names - at the time I was researching this, I was working on side lines only if they might help me in a stonewall in my main lines. " I note that an unknown (to me, anyway) Edward Smith was a witness on the 1723 will of the Thomas Smith (apparently married to an Anne Gregory) who was a son of the above John Smith and Elizabeth Berry.....and this same (almost certainly) Edward Smith was also a witness on the 1727 will of the John Smith who was a son of "our" John Smith (died 1669) and Margaret Unknown. This son of John and Margaret (Unknown) Smith named John Smith (who left his will in 1727 in Middlesex) is typically "styled" as Captain John Smith, and he was supposedly married to a Phoebe/Phebe Unknown....who APPARENTLY had been married earlier to a George Reeves. I have yet to find any proof as to who this Edward Smith, who was a witness on BOTH of the above-referenced wills, was. Any comments on this Edward Smith?" I have not researched him, but his name pops up in my database. Will Book B 1713-1734, part 2 86=p.333 John Smith.... 1 Nov 1727/2 Jan 1727[28].... Brother James Smith. Nephew John Smith. Nephew William Smith land and plantation. Niece Phebe Lawson when she is of age. Niece Phebe Daniel when she comes of age. Niece Elizabeth Smith when she is of age. Niece Jane Smith when she is of age. Niece Ann Smith, daughter of my brother James Smith. Neice Margaret Smith, daughter of my brother James Smith. Mary Freeston, daughter of George Freeston, decd. Three nephews viz Cary Smith, William Smith and Oswald Smith and Dinah Smith when they come of age. Exors: Said three nephews and William Lawson. Wit: Edward Clark, Edward Smith and William Bristow. This is son John of John and Margaret ? Smith line. Perhaps Edward is a brother of the father John? I am not convinced, based on the will, that this John married or had children. "Note: My records show that Thomas and Ruth (Smith?) Smith had a son named John Smith on 24 Jan 1704, and this John Smith married Elizabeth Aldin." Robert Aldin, father of John, is my line, so I do have John's will abstract: p85 John Alldin - 23 Feb 1726/2 May 1727 -- Wife Frances Alldin my plantation and land for life. Son John Alldin, dau Elizabeth Smith, wife of John Smith. Dau Frances Alldin and Martha Alldin. Land adjoining Edwin Thacker, Mr. Richard Willis and John Burcks. Exors: Wife, son in law John Smith and son John Alldin. One of the problems with these families is that they not only intermarried, but were step and step step parents to each other also, as husbands and wives died and they remarried friends and neighbors. So wills and land records can be difficult to decipher. Also, While names like Garritt/Garrett or Augustine seem novel today, I have been burned a few times trying to find an ancestor by that name only to discover it was just a popular name of the times - names had fads, even then; also, friends and godparents had children named after them. My main line - my father's - is John Scott - try finding those ancestors!!!! I have not worked on this line for quite a while - I am sure if I went back online doing searched with Google Books and other databases there would be new sources that might help. Because most of the mysteries in that line are either solved or unsolvable at this point, I am working on other puzzles. Lyn Notify Administrator about this message?
