Lyn...My maternal gg-grandfather was named Smith W. Brown (born 1817-1818), and he was reared by John Brown, who I strongly believe came from the family of Francis Brown "I" (died 1691/1692 in Essex Co., VA) who is also the ancestor of your Daniel Brown who married Elizabeth Coleman. This John Brown married Mary Bennett in Middlesex Co., VA in 1805. I believe that this John Brown was the son of the older John Brown of Essex Co., VA who married Mary Kidd by 1785.
When one of my living male "Brown" cousins took the DNA test, he matched no Browns at all, but much to our surprise, he matched instead two men who trace back to the Alexander Smith who was in Lancaster/Middlesex Co., VA by at least the 1650s. Per a lot of research, it appears that Smith W. Brown was a Smith who was adopted as an infant, and he was most likely born in King and Queen or Caroline Co., VA (note: there were no Smiths at all on the 1810 and 1820 Middlesex censuses where John and Mary (Bennett) Brown lived). The above Mrs. Mary (Bennett) Brown had an apparent brother who was named Smith Bennett, and I suspect that the mother, Mrs. Winnie Bennett, had the maiden name of "Smith."
DNA essentially proves that I am related to the family of Alexander Smith, but we do not know if Alexander Smith had any brothers or uncles in America with him. If he did, then my direct Smith lineage COULD be back to any such OTHER branches of this same overall Smith family.
By the way, Daniel and Elizabeth (Coleman) Brown had a daughter who was also named Elizabeth, and that Elizabeth Brown married a John Brown (said to be her cousin, and said to have been a son of the Abraham Brown who married Mary Tribble and who lived in Caroline Co., VA). John and Elizabeth (Brown) Brown had a son named Coleman Brown, and Coleman married a Catherine Nalle. We have a donor in the Brown DNA testing project who is out of this couple, and as expected, he matched "Group 10" therein. If you need any information on the family of Francis Brown "I," please let me know.
