Re; Blakely Family
I have been reading messages on several family forums for about two years, but this time I just had to get online. I
descend from Charles Blakely of Knox Co.,TN. He had a large
family, all but two of them have been traced well(James and
John). According to Felix C. Brown, who had married Jincy
Blakely, dau/of Capt. Felix C. Blakely, a grandson of Charles, our family descends from an old South Carolina family. I have a copy of a page from an old Kansas history book that Lois Laird sent me a few years ago that shows his interview, and I would send it to anyone who would like a copy. Felix Brown was the son of Matilda Patton who married the first Gideon L.Brown, Matilda the daughter of Thomas Patton & Martha Blakely, she a daughter of Charles. My lineage is Charles BLakely & Margaret Davis; Alexander & Sarah Lakey; Charles & Lucetta Lemmons; John Lemmons & Lydia Sampson; and Edna Lydia Blakely who married Abraham Henry Titus. These are my paternal grandparents.
The Blakely family is very hard to trace because there was
so many of them, and as in most Irish and Scotch/Irish families, they used the same names. Charles father was said
to be James Blakely, but it is certainly the James Blakely
that married Jennie Tye. They are buried in the Blakely
family cemetery at Buchanan Co., MO, and are of the age to
be Charles' son, but the names of his children show him to
be of another large family that came into Daviess Co. Mo.
I strongly suspect that our ancestor was from a large group
of people that were related, Blakely, Armstrong, Fleming,
Witherspoon, etc. They were established in the Pee Dee area
at Williamsburg. You can find almost nothing on them, but
John M. Gregg has published a 2 vol. set of books that gives very brief information on th old settlers there and
shows where he found the information. The Blakelys were
John who had married Elizabeth Fleming, had children, and
died 1744, and James who married Elizabeth McMullin. James
died in 1766 and his wife married John Fleming. Although
John Blakely left a will he did not mention his children by
name, and James left no will. He was known to have had a
daughter named Jannet who had married an Armstrong and had
several children including 3 sons who were in Marion's Brigade. John Fleming mentioned only Elizabeth Blakely, his
wife's daughter in his will. The sources for this were Cook
Boddie and Moore. I found one of these books and copied
several pages. There is one family of Blakelys that without
doubt, come from one of them. I found in an old book at the
McDonald Co. MO library on the settlers of Marion Co. TN.
The James Blakely that was there brought all those names with him. There have been many mistakes made in the history
and my great uncle Wilbur is responsible for some of them.
He had a great desire to get the family info together, but
very little talent. He wrote that our Blakely ancestor had
come over after the revolution, settling in VA where Charles was born. Family tradition shows that Charles took part in our Revolution, and he was born in 1736. James and
John came to the Pee Dee in 1732. The Revolution had to be the trying times in Ireland before that time. Uncle Wilbur
evidently misunderstood whatever he had been told, and I know now this is a very common problem in going by what
someone tells you. (In fact it happens every day in our
household.) Gregory Perry, P.H.D., a professor in Oregon
has published a book on our Blakely family and used one of
the common misspellings "The Charles Blackley Family". He
had asked for submissions and he got a lot of them. He put
together a very nice book and I will always treasure it,
but there are mistakes. I have worked long and hard trying
to correct them and add to the known history, and have made
my own personal books on 3 of Alexander's siblings that had
come into N.W. MO, Joseph Martin Blakely, Jesse Blakely, and
Martha Blakely Patton. Some of the other siblings I have
included briefly in MY Blakely Family book. I have no intent
to publish this material, but will have to determine what I will do with it. I also want to mention that there was a Robert Blakely in Knox or Whitley Co., Kentucky and others
there that I have not been able to trace, and I am pretty
sure I have seen John Blakely and Rachel Orr mentioned in
Knox Co. TN information. I often wondered about this, but
did not investigate it, as our John Blakely was believed
have married a Lavina Brown. Later I will tell you all what
I have learned about John Calloway Blakely. Alma
