Dear Kimberly,

Thank you for the thank you!

I thought I'd warn you there's not much in the way of records that can be found for John and Rachel Blakely, and their children, during the years they lived in Laurens County South Carolina. The Laurens County courthouse burned in 1844, destroying most of the early records.

John Blakey Sr. appears on a Washington District Equity Court record in 1814. It states he died "sometime in 1798", leaving a hundred acres of land, and his widow,"Rachel" conveyed her one-third share to her "sons, William and Thomas". The land adjoins their property. Her sons are settling the estate, selling and dividing the land, and the record names John and Rachel's children, and the children of their two deceased children.I know of no other record in South Carolina that names a John Blakely who's certainly the one we're looking for.

Internet reports that John Blakely Sr. served in the militia during the Revolution need to be verified. South Carolina keeps it's own militia records. The South Carolina militia records are in the state archives, not the national archives. I haven't seen the records, and am trying to get ahold of them now, but typically, a militia record wouldn't contain enough information to positively identify John. He was too old even at the beginning of the war to have served in the military, and there were several John Blakeleys in South Carolina, even in just Laurens County, so this has to proven from the surving records before it can be accepted.

Circumstantial evidence suggests the Wlliam Blakely who survived the massacre at Hayes Station may have been John and Rachel's son, William, but no proof of it has yet been found. If William was their son, then probably several of their sons served.

Which of their children are descended from? I'm descended from their son, Robert, who married Martha Dillon, and moved to Washinmgton County, Tennessee.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Always,
Lynn
