Bruce, I'm researching my KNOX connections to the BLAKELYs in Mecklenburg Co, NC.If you have any new research that can confirm or refute my thesis, please contact me!Peggy
-----------------------------
Based on the evidence given below, I SPECULATE that Rebecca Blakely was the widow of Jasper Blakely, sister of David Smith and Mary (Smith) Knox, and Aunt to John Knox, b. 22 May 1777, son of Capt Patrick and Mary (Smith) Knox.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Among the early Ruling Elders found at Gilead A. R. P. are the names of William Henderson, DAVID SMITH...JASPER BLAKELY...John and Ewart Bell...and John Price, Jr. Names that like that of Ezekiel Alexander, another one, recall the elder and earliest families of Mecklenburg County. There are many unmarked graves at Gilead."(Worth S. Ray - MS&TN, page 406)
David Smith, d. Jan 12, 1823, age 81, his wife Nancy (nee Kenmer? Kenmore/Kinmore?), nephew James and two nieces, Esther and Eliza, are buried a Gilead. Rebecca and Jasper Blakely MAY be buried in unmarked graves at Gilead A.R.P.
Gilead A. R. P is located in Huntersville, 5 miles north of Hopewell Church.
[See 1823 LWT of David Smith and his bequest to Rebecca Blakely - below]

First Census Record for any Blackley/Blakely in Mecklenburg Co, NC:

State: North Carolina

2 WM 16-25 b. 1775-1784 (James, Thomas)
3 WF 16-15 b. 1775-1784 (Agnes, Jane, Mary)

Clues to SMITH/KNOX CONNECTIONS:
Locating the "adjoining" neighbors on the 1800 Census provides some interesting clues. On the 1800 Census of Mecklenburg Co, NC, page 564, listed in the order of their appearance are:
1) MARTIN STEEL
Martin Steel/Steele, Wm Hill and Robert Dunlap are listed as JOHN KNOX'sadjoining "neighbors" on McDowell Creek (Mecklenburg Deed Bk16, page 460 - Deed dated 10 July 1800)
[This is Martin Steele, Sr. who m. Sarah Hunter.]
2) WIDOW BLAKELY
Not listed in 10 July 1800 McDowell Deed [from Samuel Wilson to John Knox], but located right in the MIDDLE of the bunch who are listed, is the "Widow Blakely" who d. 1835 - January 1838.
Rebecca Blakely [presumed widow of Jasper Blakely] inherited 122 A in 1823, from DAVID SMITH ofMecklenburg Co, NC
Her relationship with David Smith is unclear, however, based upon his/her ages, it appears Rebecca was his sister [and also older sister of Mary Smith, making her the Aunt of John Knox, son of Patrick and Mary (Smith) Knox.]
In 1838, Rebecca willed "to my daughters Mary [nee Blakely] Hunter and Jane Blackley [Blakely]...the plantation I now live on, with its improvements".Daughter
Mary [Blakely] Hunter diedbetween 1841-1844
Between Jan 1844 and March 1846, Jane Blakely then sold the plantation to John Knox. [Need to locate this deed...]
In 1846, John Knox sold 126 A. of land to his son Robert J. Wilson Knox [Mecklenburg Real Estate Conveyances transaction for 126 acres, dated 7 March 1846].
This property (126 acres) is identified by name as "the BLAKELY place" in John Knox's 1853 LWT, noting the title already having been passed to his son, R. J. W. Knox.
3) ROBERT DUNLAP
Listed as a "Dunlap" neighbor on the 10 July 1800 Deed, Robert Dunlap appears on this census page.
In April 1805,John Knox sold land to Robert Dunlap [Mecklenburg Co, NC Deed Book 20, p 95; 21 Aug 1805]
JOHN KNOX to ROBERT DUNLAP for L79.10.0; 53 A on the head of McDowell Cr adj to JAMES CURRY and other land of the grantee [John Knox].
Wit: Danl. McCauly [McAuley], Jurat & Daniel Davis
Proven at May Court 1815, test Isaac Alexander, CMC. Reg 20 Jun 1815
4) JAMES CURREY/CURRY
Also on the 1800 census page, but not mentioned on the deeds, JAMES CURRYwho was co-signer with Samuel Wilson for JOHN and JANE KNOX's Guardian Bond made in Mecklenburg Co, NC,April 1794.
[See April 1805 Deed above.]
In August 1819, JAMES CURRY sold land adjoining JOHN KNOX to Samuel Johnston[Mecklenburg Co, NC Deed Book 21, page 143,25 Aug 1819 ]:
JAMES CURRY to Saml Johnston for $179, 126 A adj Alexander Gillespie, Jonathan Duvest [Deweese], JOHN KNOX, and other lands of the grantee.
Wit: Alexander Gillespie, Acknd at August Court 1819, test Isaac Alexander, CMC Reg 13 Oct 1819.

Mecklenburg Co, NC Deed Book 18 ; p 375; 16 Aug 1805

These are Rebecca's sons mentioned in her 1835 LWT:
James and Thomas Blackley/Blakely/Blakley:
1810 Census
Capt McKinly, Mecklenburg, NC 1810
JAS BLAKLEY (10010-20100-000)
Capt McKinly, Mecklenburg, NC
THOS BLAKLEY (00100-00201-001)
I speculate that the older female in Thos Blakely's household was his mother, Rebecca, and the two other females were his sisters: Jane and Mary.
Agnes was probably already married.
