Hi,

First, BLACKWELDER is the Americanized version of SCHWARZWALDER, which is German. Schwarz is German for Black so you can see how they got Blackwelder out of Schwarzwalder. The family was from Wurttemburg in Germany which also contains the Black Forest region. Schwarzwalder can be literally translated as "Black Forest". I heard a rumor once that the family were land barons, the lowest one could be on the German royalty lists. But still...

Anyway, The patriarch of the Schwarzwalders came to America in the 1740's. This man was Gottlieb Schwarzwalder, who changed his name to Caleb Blackwelder. He had a son named Jacob Blackwelder and also one named Isaac Blackwelder (there were about a dozen other kids too). Isaac had a son Jacob, born in Cabarrus County, May 5, 1779 - died December 1836. I don't have any record at hand for a wife of either of the two Jacobs above.

Jacob son of Isaac above is well documented and seems too much of a coincidence to be different from yours supposedly from Ireland. There are several twists and turns to the Blackwelder lineage, but I have definitely never heard of any coming from Ireland.

Can you tell me the source of your info?

Greg Matthews
