Blackmer Family Genealogy Forum

Recently I answered a post on the Blackman forum which according to published Rochester VRs seems to belong in the Blackmer forum (I know of no interaction/interchangeability, in eastern Mass. or elsewhere, between the two families). Dick Wells posted a query on the ancestry of one Phebe Blackman, who married Nathaniel Whitcomb at Rochester, Mass., in 1738, and in 1740 had his ancestress, Content Whitcomb. According to published Rochester VRs 2:316, Nathaniel Whitcomb m. 27 July 1738 Phebe Blackmer (not Blackman). I notice a Phebe Blackmer, b. Rochester 24 May 1704 (VRs 1:38) which seems oldish, but apparently Phebe was Nathaniel Whitcomb's second wife -- "Rossillah," the first wife, d. Rochester 8 March 1737 (VRs 2:443). This must be Rose Cumbs/Combs, whom he had m. at Rochester 21 Jan. 1722/3 (VRs 2:316). The Rochester Blackmer family apparently has its origins in the old town of Scituate, also in Plymouth Co., Mass. The first volume of 17th-century town records for the town of Scituate has recently been edited by the distinguished Mayflower scholar Jeremy Dupertuis Bangs, and published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, Mass., and may well repay close study. I don't have access to it at present, however, and will content myself with noting some Blackmers in Scituate and Rochester VRs. Do not be shocked if you see Blackmer, Blackmar, Blackmore, Blackmoor, etc.; not until the last century or so have most people insisted on spelling their surnames one way, and not however the check is made out. Note the ties to Plymouth County and Cape Cod towns, from whose VRs (many are published) you may also derive useful data. Note also the early movement (by ca. 1740s) from Mayflower country to inland places such as Hardwick, in Worcester Co., Mass. Scituate VRs: Births (1:35): John Blackmer, son of William, 16 Dec. 1669 ["Blackmore" in recs. of 2nd Church, Scituate, now 1st Unitarian Church of Norwell] Peter Blackmer, son of William, b. 25 May 1667 ["Blackmore" in recs. of 2nd Church, Scituate] "Phepe" Blackmor, dau. of William, b. 12 Aug. 1672 ["Phebe Blackmore" in recs. of 2nd Church, Scituate] William Blackmor, son of William, b. 25 Feb. 1675 ["Blacmore" in recs. of 2nd Church, Scituate] Marriages (VRs 2:31) William Blackmer, m. 17 July 1666 Elizabeth Bankes. Please note that I have just been thumbing through published VRs and have nothing about these families in my so-called "files," which I can't find anyway. The Plymouth VRs, compiled by Lee D. van Antwerp and edited by the late Ruth Wilder Sherman, were published in 1994 by Picton Press of Camden, Maine, and should be available through Interlibrary Loan if your library doesn't have a copy. Hope this helps various Blackmer researchers out there. Best of luck!
