Hi, Harold...so glad to see your message..have been going blind to find info. My father's name was Emmitt Quitman Blackman. I never knew for sure why he had this middle name. Sometimes I think my grandmother entrusted favored friends to help name her children so I assumed this was the case. Perhaps this is not so and there was an old connection to a family name with which I was not familiar. My gggrandfather was William J. Blackman, whose wife was Harriet Singley. He enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private on Feb.15, l862 at Loachapoka, Ala., captured Salisbury, N.C.,on April l2 l865 and later died of disease contracted during his confinement..Harriet applied for a widow's pension April 27, l891. William's Confederate Oath of Allegiance, Co. "H" 1st Regiment Alabama describes him as being "complexion" DK, "hair" BLK., "eyes" BLK. "ht." 5' 8" at age 40 years. My father's family carries these same characteristics, being somewhat taller, not much in most cases...with strong features associated with what we consider the Indian face. Neithe of my sons have chest hair, with light beards. These all make me beleive we are indeed Choctaw. If you have any further info concerning this connection pls forward asap. I suspect we are out of the Mississippi Choctaw originally. You might look at the "Dawes Final Rolls" and check for the name Blackman. The screen is full of our name. Also check the Ala and Miss Choctaw Indian Rolls. We even show up on the Dawes rolls as a Cherokee Blackman or two. Thanks so much for your posting...I am interested in what you can tell me about the indian line and also the name Quitman. Good hunting... P. S. My grandfather, Steven Silas Blackman was born in Tallapoosa Co, Ala. and the family was there for a good long time. Notify Administrator about this message?
