My 4g great-grandfather Yelverton Payton from Banner, Fulton County,Illinois served as a 2nd Lieutenant in Captain Elijah Wilcockson's Company. I have information from the;
"Collections of the Illinois State Historical Library", Volume 1,
ILLINOIS VOLUNTEERS, The Black Hawk War, 1831-32,
Compiled and Edited by Ellen M. Whitney.
The info contains the roster list of the company and pay roll amounts for 12 days of service from 23 June 1831 to 4 July.
It states,
"All of the company members who have been identified were from Fulton County, which was presumably the place of enrollment. Although no company muster rolls have been located, an index to Illinois muster rolls in DNA identifies the company as a mounted militia unit at Fort Gum, which was in Henderson Township,Knox County.Twenty miles of travel was held equivalent to one day's service in figuring pay for officers."
Most of the info pertains to how Captain Wilcockson's company was paid.
I have read accounts of a skirmish which took place just a little north of Fulton County, I have never been able to find info that would place Captain Wilcockson's Company at this fight, but I would think it was a very good possibilty the company was involved?
Just curious, were your Wilcockson ancestors of the Baptist faith? Were the Wilcockson's from the Pee Dee area of North Carolina... Anson,Richmond,Moore Counties?
