You might try contacting the Illinois State Historical Society, or one of their regional collection points located at colleges in various parts of the state. Is it possible that he was serving with a Federal regiment? If that's the case he probably wouldn't be listed in the Illinois database...that's only for men who signed on in Illinois.
One other possibility is that a county historical society might have some records. You might try the LaSalle County Historical Society as a starting point.
