Hello Ben,
My Mother was Helen Blackhall whose birthplace was in Scotland. The book that tells the story is:
Title: The Blackhalls of that Ilk and Barra, hereditary Coroners & Foresters of the Garioch.
Author : Alexander Morison
The book is out of print but the Mormon Library has a copy in Utah.It is a long time since I saw the book but I seem to remember that the William de Blackhall came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066 and went to the North and into Scotland. There are other branches of the family in England. All my family were named William, Thomas,John or James and there is a set order of first names which passes down from generation to generation. The family branch that lived in Barra died out about the 1700 s and they had a heraldic coat of arms with a falcon perched on a gauntlet with an emerald ring on the crest of the helmet. Some of my family emigrated to Canada and my particular branch came to the Lowlands of Scotland.Your history books will tell you that Scotland in the 1700 s was in a state of upheaval !
Best wishes, James Miles.
