The Blacker family claimed descent from a Danish King of Dublin, Blacar, who lived in the 10th century. According to the family tradition Blacar's descendants left Ireland and settled in Yorkshire. Valentine Blacker, of Poppleton, Yorkshire, born 1597, came to Ulster in the reign of Charles I and married Judith, daughter of Sir Michael Harrison, of Ballygargan, Co. Down. He left many Ulster descendants, the wealthiest branch seated at Carrickblacker. The Blacker family genealogy is given in 'Burke's Irish family Records', which some public libraries have.
