BLACH, Edmond - Roland Ledebuhr - His Story of Edmond
August 2002
Recap Telephone Conversation Between Roland Ledebuhr & Sally Blach.
By some miracle I was able to get a hold of and speak with Roland Ledebuhr through Dale Ledebuhr - whom I corresponded with over the GenForum genealogy messages boards.
According to Roland, Edmond told him he fled from his "aunt" - a retired school teacher from Chicago, Illinois - back to Michigan.Edmond said this "aunt" paid for his trip from Chicago to Michigan, and for all his room and board too.
Edmond didn't talk much more to Roland about his "aunt", but did tell Roland he found out he was a BLACH at a USO Family Service meeting, and that why he made his way back to Michigan.Roland said Edmond didn't discuss his past - and he didn't press Edmond for more.
Roland first met Edmond while Roland was a freshman at Capac High School in Capac, Michigan.
Although the Ledebuhr's were a poor family in Capac, they took Edmond in and treated him like one of their own - even in death.(Edmond - first buried at Okinawa, Iwo Jima - he is now buried next to Roland's parents in Evangeline Cemetery, Capac, MI.Tombstone reads:Edmond Majeski Blach)
Roland Ledebuhr, Wesley & Delta Ledebuhr's only child, was very excited to have Edmond as his brother!
Roland said he admired Edmond.(There's a Capac High School "Edmond Majeski Memorial Award" still being awarded each year to the best scholastic & athletic achiever.
Roland was very tearful during my conversation with him - recapping so many memories.Roland couldn't say enough good things about Edmond, and missed Edmond very dearly - even today.
NOTE:
According my father, Edward Blach, Edmond came to their grandpa Martin Horetski's funeral in November 1940.
My father thinks a Majeski family either legally adopted Edmond OR allowed Edmond to use the name.
It has been suggested Edmond and a "Majeski daughter" were planning to get married soon after Edmond returned from military duty.
Edmond graduated Capac High School in 1941.He died in 1942.
