Dear Richard,
I have only discovered your message re our common family name. Whilst I am very interested in all aspects of tracing the origin of the name I find at present such work has been put aside for other commitments. As you will have seen from messages I was originally in contact with Alan Scullion and at one time with a Mark Bittle in Auckland New Zealand. Alan's family come through the Scottish Ayrshire family and Mark's were from Southern England.
It might interest you that I was recently on a very short trip to Germany and had reason to enquire of a very elderly person as to the name Bittle. She was able to tell me that the term "The Buttel or Bittleman will get you" was often used by parent's to scare their children into obediance. She further explained that the 'Bittleman' was an agent of the squire or local landowner usually a rent collector or such who was often feared in the townships as he was the voice of authority and if peop[le couldn't pay their dues they often had to evade his wrath.I believe also that baseball was originally called bittleball is this correct ?

I hope this little snippet interests you and I would be glad to hear any other relevant material you may have on the subject. Apart from a gret uncle Matthew Bittle who emigrated to Canada via USA(Ellis Island early in the 20th Century, I have no other American connections (to my knowledge).
kindest regards
Brian. A. Bittle.
