Have you had any further luck in researching your Bitting ancestors? I have been continuing to work on your branch, as well as others. My page on David Bitting is at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bitting/BIT02094.htm. I have information from the Calif. death records on Kathleen Plater Bitting and her two sons Clarence and Ralph. Unfortunately I haven't found anything on Kathleen's husband Clarence and he doesn't show up as a child in the 1880 census listing of David and Luella's family in Iowa. Do you have any further information that may help in connecting him with this family.

This past year I heard from some descendants of David's brother Samuel (http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bitting/BIT02100.htm). Some of his children moved to Florida; others to Indiana. I don't know if this connection with Florida has any relevance to your family.
